Last Walls of Old Wheeler High Fall

The second phase of the reconstruction project continues.

The original Wheeler High School building is history.

Construction crews have been demolishing the final portion of the main classroom building this summer as a $17 million reconstruction project continues.

While the area once occupied by the Wheeler administrative offices, auxiliary gymnasium, cafeteria and classrooms is now littered with metal and busted bricks, the sparkling new two-story classroom building next to it is nearing completion.

The original building was finished in 1965, when Wheeler opened as the second high school in East Cobb. The ongoing project will take another year to complete.

But for those who spent most of their Wheeler years in the old building (disclaimer: I'm a member of the Class of 19 blah-blah-blah), it was hard to see it finally come down, loaded with nearly 50 years of memories.
