Wheeler Grad Returns to NCAA Tourney

Richard Howell of N.C. State leads the Wolfpack as an All-ACC basketball player in his senior season.

For Richard Howell, playing in the NCAA Tournament has become a familiar routine. The former Wheeler High School basketball star, who helped the Wildcats to their last Georgia state championship in 2009, is the only player with East Cobb ties who will be playing this week in college basketball's main event. Howell, a key part of N.C. State's trip to the "Sweet 16" a year ago, has guided the Wolfpack back to "The Big Dance." N.C. State will play Temple on Friday afternoon in Dayton, Ohio. Howell, a 6-foot-8 senior forward, is second in scoring averaging 12.7 points a game and leads the Wolfpack and the ACC with 10.7 rebounds. He also was named to the All-ACC first team. Howell's hard-nosed style of play has won him plenty of plaudits. A …

Wheeler's Title Hopes End in Semis

Hillgrove held off the Wildcats Saturday to advance to the Class AAAAAA boys basketball state championship game.

Jerron Love had two chances to keep Wheeler High School's hopes alive for a state basketball championship Saturday. The Wildcats' player made one of two free throws to cut Hillgrove's lead to one point with nine seconds to play, then missed a jumper at the buzzer as Wheeler fell 56-54 in a Class AAAAAA semifinal game at Georgia Tech. In losing to their Cobb rivals, Wheeler also was denied a chance for its sixth state title.  But Wheeler, which finished the season with a 21-9 record, has reasserted itself as an elite team and will return most of its top players. Among them are junior forward Elijah Staley, who has already been offered scholarships by major college basketball programs, and sophomore center Daniel Giddens. More coverage:

Wheeler Meets Hillgrove in State Semis

It will be East Cobb vs. West Cobb Saturday at Georgia Tech in the Class AAAAAA boys basketball tournament.

Another high-flying, high-scoring game for Elijah Staley yielded another win for the Wheeler Wildcats. Wheeler reached the semifinals of the Class AAAAAA state basketball tournament on Wednesday with a 60-47 win over Peachtree Ridge. Staley, a junior who is receiving major college recruiting attention, scored 17 points, many on slam dunk baskets, to lead a balanced scoring attack for Wheeler, which is 21-8 on the season. It's the ninth Final Four appearance for the Wildcats under coach Doug Lipscomb but the first in four years. Wheeler, which plays Cobb rival Hillgrove Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Georgia Tech's McCamish Pavilion, won the last of its four state titles in 2009. The other boys semifinal pits North Cobb against Norcross. That …

Wheeler Slams Meadowcreek With Ease

The Wildcats reached the quarterfinals of the Class AAAAAA tourney with a big home win Saturday.

Elijah Staley wasn't the only Wheeler player who went to the rim -- and often -- in a second-round state tournament game Saturday night. But the junior star was perhaps the most stylish for the Wildcats, who pulled away early enroute to a 96-52 win over Meadowcreek. Wheeler bolted out to a 17-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and kept building on the lead to improve to 20-8 on the seaon. On Wednesday, the Wildcats will play at home aginst Peachtree Ridge in the Class AAAAAA quarterfinals. For Staley, who's a contestant in the AJC high school basketball slam dunk contest, a sequence at the end of the third quarter ought to get him some more votes. He missed a layup, but got his own rebound and slammed it in as the Wildcats led 76-36. …

Wheeler Faces Meadowcreek Tonight

The Wildcats play at home in a second-round state basketball tournament game starting at 6 p.m.

The Wheeler Wildcats are the only East Cobb team that survived the first round of the Georgia High School high school basketball tournament. After defeating Dacula on Wednesday, the Wildcats (19-8) stay at home in a second-round game tonight against another Gwinnett opponent. The game against Meadowcreek tips off at 6 p.m. at the Doug Lipscomb Gym. Tickets are $7. Wheeler Boys Claim Region Title

The Wheeler girls, Walton boys and Pope boys and girls teams also qualified for the state basketball tournament.

After losing twice to Roswell during the regular season, the Wheeler High School boys basketball team had to play on the Hornets' home floor Saturday night in the Region 5-AAAAAA championship game. As they did with Walton in the semifinals, however, the Wildcats avenged earlier defeat when it counted the most, claiming a 74-60 win to earn the No. 1 seed from the region heading into next week's Georgia High School Association state tournament. Wheeler had four double-figure scorers, led by 17 points from Jaylen Brown, to improve to 18-8 on the season. More on the game from The Marietta Daily Journal. The Wildcats will be playing host to Dacula in the first round of the Class AAAAAA tournament on Wednesday. Here's the rest of the schedule …

Ex-Wheeler Star Hired at Kentucky

Danielle Santos has been named a basketball assistant coach for the SEC regular season champions.

Former Wheeler High School basketball star Danielle Santos was named an assistant coach at the University of Kentucky Tuesday.  Santos scored more than 1,100 points, pulled down more than 500 rebounds and had nearly 500 steals during her high school career for Wheeler, which reached the state quarterfinals during her junior season in 2001. She played at the University of Florida when current Kentucky coach Matthew Mitchell was an assistant, and earned her degree in exercise and sports sciences in 2006. For the last two seasons, Santos has been an assistant coach at Illinois State. Prior to that, she served in a similar capacity at Hofstra University, where her former Wheeler coach, Krista Kilburn-Steveskey, is the head coach.  Kentucky is …

Mitchell Officially Becomes a Terp

The Wheeler basketball star has signed his scholarship letter with the University of Maryland.

Another Wheeler High School basketball star is headed for the Atlantic Coast Conference.  On Thursday, Charles "Chuck" Mitchell signed his national letter-of-intent with the University of Maryland.  Mitchell, a 6-foot-8 power forward and center, verbally committed to the Terrapins shortly after the Wildcats' season ended in the first round of the Georgia Class AAAAA state tournament. He averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds as a senior for the Wildcats. This week, he became the fourth member of Maryland coach Mark Turgeon's 2012 signing class, adding to a strong Terps' frontline. Said Mitchell upon his signing: "I love the fan support and the whole history of Maryland basketball. I wanted to come to a school that supports basketball and where…

Ex-Wheeler Star Plays in Sweet 16

Richard Howell has helped propel N.C. State into tonight's NCAA tournament game with Kansas.

Richard Howell has admittedly struggled with foul troubles as his college basketball career has continued.  But his emergence for N.C. State this season symbolizes in many ways how the Wolfpack have battled their way into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.  N.C. State barely made it into the 68-team field when it was announced earlier this month, but it's been a sure thing since then, including an upset of Georgetown on Sunday.  Now Howell, a junior forward who helped Wheeler win a Class AAAAA state title in 2009, faces another big challenge in tonight's Sweet 16 game in St. Louis: The Kansas Jayhawks and All-American forward Thomas Robinson.  Howell's up-and-down season has been marked by foul trouble and some mood swings stemming from …

Wheeler Star Pledges to Maryland

Chuck Mitchell announced on Twitter Thursday morning that he will sign with the ACC school.

Wheeler High School basketball standout Chuck Mitchell is taking his talents to the Atlantic Coast Conference.  Mitchell, a 6-foot-8 center, announced on his Twitter account Thursday morning that he will attend the University of Maryland:  "I just want to say to my twitter family I will being a Maryland uniform next year! #goterps!" He made the announcement just before the Terrapins took to the floor at Philips Arena Thursday afternoon in the ACC Tournament. Maryland downed Wake Forest 82-60.  Mitchell, rated as one of the top unsigned players by a number of college scouting services, had been recruited by Tennessee and Memphis, among other finalists.  Maryland fans rushed to congratulate Mitchell on his Twitter feed, with one eager to "…
