The crafts retailer is relocating from the nearby East Cobb Crossing Shopping Center and into the former Borders bookstore space.
For more than a year, East Cobb shoppers have wondered what might go into the vast, empty space vacated by Borders when the book retailer went out of business. East Cobb Patch also solicited reader preferences, but for many months more no official word was forthcoming. But on Monday, The Avenue East Cobb made official what had been rumored to be the case for months: a nearby Michaels store was relocating, bringing its specialty arts and crafts inventory to a space where once books were sold. A spokeswoman for The Avenue said Monday that Michaels will re-open in the fall, but that a specific date has not been determined. The Avenue East Cobb has lost its anchor tenant, but business has been thriving in recent weeks with the opening of several new shops and a restaurant. The Roswell Road center is still seeking a new occupant for the space once held by Borders, the retail book chain that went out of business last fall. There's also room for another restaurant in the space formerly occupied by Johnny Rockets. But most of the rest of the available smaller space has been taken up recently by a host of new entries to the East Cobb shopping scene: In addition, the Gap store at The Avenue recently underwent a major renovation. On May 5, the Taste of East Cobb will return to The Avenue, its original location. But about that old Borders store: What would you …

The struggling bookstore chain is shutting down its remaining 399 locations after failing to attract buyers.
The last Borders store in Cobb County, and the only major bookstore location in East Cobb, is on the verge of closing its doors. Various news reports indicated late Monday afternoon that the Borders Group Inc. is planning to liquidate its remaining 399 stores, including The Avenue East Cobb, after efforts to sell the chain fell through over the weekend. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Borders will ask a judge to approve a sale to a liquidation firm Thursday, and other sources are indicating that liquidation sales could begin as early as Friday. As of late Monday afternoon, no announcement had been posted on the Borders website, but various news organizations obtained official statements from the company confirming the news. …
