The Spartan Race raised funds for agencies working with the homeless and the hungry.
In March, a team from East Cobb's Seed Kitchen & Bar competed in the Spartan Race - a grueling obstacle racing challenge. They trained hard prior with one staffer even losing 100 pounds before the race. The group raised more than $6,000 for Cobb County's MUST Ministries and Share Our Strength - great cause and camaraderie. L to R: Patrick Peterson, Garn McGown, C.J. Seed Kitchen & Bar of East Cobb has been included in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's recent compilation of notable places to eat in the area. The Atlanta 50 profile noted that Seed owner and chef Doug Turbush "dutifully satisfies your Southern cravings for pimento cheese, shrimp and grits, and deviled eggs. He also pushes you to venture out of our small corner of the planet." Seed, which opened its doors at Merchants Walk less than two years ago, will soon unveil Stem, a wine bar located next door. In nearby East Marietta, Tasty China, located at 585 Franklin Road, also has made the list. Says the AJC: "We still prefer the janky strip-mall Tasty China to its far fancier sibling on Powers Ferry Road. And we still find new dishes that …

A roundup of news and other items about the East Cobb dining scene.
It's been just over a year since Seed Kitchen & Bar took root at Merchant's Walk Shopping Center. The much-talked-about Seed (1311 Johnson Ferry Road) was included among the "Best New Restaurants" of 2012 by Atlanta magazine. In a recent interview with Atlanta Eater, owner and chef Doug Turbush said while he's generally been pleased with the reception, "something we're going to do differently is build up a bigger brunch crowd." Earlier this week, Seed sent out notice that its Sunday brunch service now begins at 10 a.m. and has some changes on its expanded menu. Among the new features are Create Your Own Omelette options and a Farmer's Breakfast with eggs any style and carmelized banana-pecan waffles. New brunch option in Powers Ferry area …

Attendees at the Taste of East Cobb food festival on May 5 have voted with their palates -- and their stomachs -- for their favorite fare. And they are: Best Taste: Seed Kitchen & Bar Best Dessert: Keegan's Public House Best Value: Seed Kitchen & Bar Friendliest Service: Baked Most Likely to Visit: Red Sky Tapas Highest Sales: Georgia Rib Company While Red Sky and Georgia Rib Company are familiar to East Cobb diners, and Seed opened last fall to wide public acclaim, the honor for Keegan's is worth noting. The proprietors of an Irish pub by the same name in Kennesaw opened their East Cobb location last month in the former Shaughnessy's Pub space in Shallowford Corners. Their winning dessert was the Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding, which we …

Nearly a year after its latest renaissance, Merchant's Walk Shopping Center is just about filled up. The opening of Whole Foods last July brought with it the arrival of a number retail outlets, service shops and restaurants that continues today. After the first wave of openings last summer, the opening of Seed Kitchen & Bar continued the revival into the winter and this spring. In March, the Rhinoceros boutique opened after relocating to East Cobb from the Shops Around Lenox. Both are located in the Whole Foods building of the Merchant's Walk center. Developed and managed by the retail firm EDENS, the complex includes seven free-standing buildings and more than 361,000 square feet of commercial space. Coming soon is the NUVO Salon, …

Mother's Day is next Sunday, so this week we polled readers about their favorite place in East Cobb to take mom for brunch. Turnout was light, as elections officials like to say, and the voting was close. Since both Marlow's Tavern and Seed Kitchen & Bar got multiple votes in this week's Readers' Choice poll, we're naming them the co-winners. Also getting single votes were Paper Mill Grill and Ritter's, two other East Cobb restaurants that will be busy on Mother's Day. On Monday, we'll introduce next week's poll, which is staycation destinations.

So much attention has been paid to the November opening of Seed Kitchen & Bar at Merchant's Walk, largely because of high-profile Atlanta chef Doug Turbush. So what's the food really like? AJC critic John Kessler is generally impressed, except for the desserts. Of similarly themed places in Marietta and Roswell—a "contemporary dining experience for a neighborhood"—he likes Seed the best, giving it three out of five stars. His biggest compliment is calling Seed a "restaurant that doesn’t just recycle crowd-approved dishes and current trends." If you're worried about the prices, Kessler does note that the steak is the only entree priced above $20. * * * * * Creative Loafing recently tried out suburban fare beyond Chamblee and Doraville, …

The redeveloped Merchant's Walk Shopping Center continues to take shape. Last Thursday, officials from the Cobb Chamber of Commerce were on hand for the ribbon-cutting of a Verizon Wireless store that has been relocated from the Providence Square shopping center. This coming Thursday, The Cook's Warehouse will open its doors next to the new Whole Foods location, with its inventory of cookware as well as classes, gadgets, equipment and services catering to home cooks and entertainers. And in perhaps the most anticipated opening at Merchant's Walk since Whole Foods, high-profile Atlanta chef Doug Turbush will open Seed Kitchen & Bar in October after leaving the upscale Buckhead Asian restaurant Bluepointe. In a recent mini-profile, …
