Spirit of America Concert at Mt. Bethel UMC

The theme for the May 19 event is "In God We Trust," featuring the male vocal group VERITAS.

Decade of Scouting Ends with Eagle’s Wings

Members of Troop 1011 at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church were honored this month.

Eight boys from Cobb and North Fulton counties have accomplished an even rarer achievement than obtaining the coveted Eagle Scout award. They reached that goal as an entire Patrol within the same Troop, and celebrated that achievement in an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 10, in front of an audience in excess of 250 attendees. Eagle Scout is the highest rank any youth can achieve in the Boy Scouts, and must be attained before turning age 18. Completing a leadership project that serves the community is the largest requirement for Eagle Scout, along with serving in leadership positions, participating in volunteer service projects, representing Scouting values and earning at least 21 merit badges. Holiday Fundraiser at Transfiguration Catholic

Mt. Bethel UMC and Johnson Ferry Baptist Church will help disburse funds from the Dec. 18 events for gifts for needy children.

Local charity foundation 79 + 1 will host its third annual Christmas Fundraiser on Tuesday, Dec. 18 to raise money for gifts for less fortunate children during the holidays. Founded by long-time East Cobb residents Rodney and Kathy Metzer, 79 + 1 Charities partners with three community churches to provide gifts and necessities for children at Christmas. The 2012 Christmas Fundraiser will take place at Transfiguration Catholic Church from 7-10 p.m. on Dec. 18. Tickets are $35 per person or $100 for a family of four. The evening will include dinner provided by Williamson Brothers Barbecue, beer and wine, live entertainment by the band FLYER, a silent auction featuring more than 100 items, and raffle drawings for gift cards to local …

Food, Politics and TSPLOST in East Cobb

Monday's campaign events include the Paper Mill Village Food Truck and a TSPLOST Town Hall meeting.

The final full week of campaigning before the July 31 primary starts off with a bang on Monday in East Cobb.  A number of candidates will be appearing at the Paper Mill Village Food Truck from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The food truck has become a regular event in East Cobb, featuring Mighty Meatballs, Tex’s Tacos, Honeysuckle Gelato, Yumbii, Brian’s Texas Hots, King of Pops and Happy Belly.  Longtime Atlanta radio personality Gary McKee will be the emcee for the event. Walton Grad Earns Huntingdon Degree

Megan Petenbrink, a member of Mt. Bethel UMC, will enter Emory University's theology program in the fall.

East Cobb resident Megan Petenbrink has earned her undergraduate degree, but her education is only continuing.  Petenbrink, a 2008 graduate of Walton High School, recently received a bachelor of arts degree in religion from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala,., graduating magna cum laude.  Petenbrink, a member of East Cobb's Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, was a member of the Huntingdon Concert Choir and served as vocalist for the EMERGE worship team. Huntingdon is a Methodist-affiliated undergraduate college of around 1,200 students. An active member of Huntingdon's Campus Ministries, she also served on the Residence Life staff as a resident assistant for two years. TSPLOST Forum Set for East Cobb

Cobb Commissioner Bob Ott is the host for a town hall meeting on July 23 at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church.

Representatives from a variety of organizations and perspectives on the upcoming TSPLOST referendum have been invited to gather in East Cobb later this month for a town hall meeting.  District 2 Cobb Commissioner Bob Ott will be the host for the July 23 event, scheduled for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, 4385 Lower Roswell Road. The town hall takes place the week before the July 31 referendum on the Transportation Investment Act, which will be decided by metro Atlanta voters, including those in Cobb.  Untie Atlanta, one of the leading groups in favor of the penny sales tax, will be represented by Chuck Clay, a former legislator from Cobb and a partner with the Brock Clay law firm in Marietta, and Terry Lawler, …

This penny tax will serve to improve the traffic infrastructure in the region. Careful attention has not been paid to our cities roadways since the Olympics. Also, not only will residents be paying into the referendum but tourists who come into the area and buy goods will be paying for it as well.   more ›
