The Merchant’s Walk Christmas Tree lighting will take place Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Holiday tunes will be performed by the Pope High School Band and the Walton High School Women's Choral Ensemble, as well as an appearance from Santa Claus, who will be on hand to light the tree for the season and for photos. The event takes place in the main shopping center of Merchant's Walk, located at 1311 Johnson Ferry Road. Guests will be treated complimentary hot cocoa and gift bags filled with Holiday discounts and giveaways from Merchant's Walk retailers. Most retailers are waiting until daylight Friday to start the official holiday shopping season.
East Cobb's two signature retail centers are avoiding the rush to Black Friday, for the most part. Three retailers at Merchant's Walk Shopping Center -- Kohl's, Old Navy and ULTA opened at midnight Friday. At The Avenue East Cobb, Jos. A Bank was open from 10 p.m. Thursday to 2 a.m. Friday. But other stores are waiting until daylight hours today to begin a long Black Friday. Around $450 million in new residential and commercial projects have been approved in the last two years, and more are on the way.
The development of a variety of commercial and residential projects in the East Cobb area in the last two years isn't about to slow down. Cobb Commissioner Bob Ott said at an East Cobb town hall meeting Tuesday that $450 million in new construction has been approved in that time in his District 2, which includes the Cumberland and Smyrna-Vinings areas. Ott, a Republican who was re-elected to a second term last week without opposition, said that dollar amount is more than the other three commission districts combined. He estimates that the residential/commercial split is roughly 50-50. The national women-oriented workout studio chain is opening a location at Merchant's Walk.
East Cobb is getting another workout studio targeted at women. The Bar Method, which touts what it calls "targeted body-sculpting," will soon be opening at the Merchant's Walk Shopping Center, 1289 Johnson Ferry Road, located between Gigi's Cupcakes and Pinkberry. Founded in 1991, The Bar Method has 72 locations in the U.S. and Canada. The Merchant's Walk store will be the company's first in Georgia. Free community classes and other information are currently available at the British Academy of Performing Arts, 2550 Sandy Plains Road. Other newly opened stores at Merchant's Walk include Calico Home (relocated and renamed from the Calico Corners store at Providence Square Shopping Center) and Road Runner Sports.

Whole Foods Market is recalling ricotta salata sold in 21 states and Washington, D.C., including its store at Merchant's Walk in East Cobb and Harry's Farmers Market in Marietta. The cheese came from its supplier, Forever Cheese Inc. of Long Island City, N.Y., because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. It's an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
