A Final Salute for a Fallen Officer

Family members, friends and colleagues of Clayton Police rookie and Lassiter graduate Sean Callahan paid tribute at his funeral.

Family members and friends of Officer Sean Callahan peered over his open casket as they took their last glimpse of him. Some gently touched his chest, hair and face, and others kissed his forehead before a Clayton County Police honor guard closed the casket and draped an American flag over it. The former swimmer at Cobb's Lassiter High School was remembered at his funeral Friday as a loving son and brother, a generous friend and "a noble officer." Callahan, 24, was shot twice in the head on Monday responding to a domestic dispute and died early Tuesday morning. Slain Officer Was Lassiter Graduate

Sean Callahan, who was killed in the line of duty this week, joined the Clayton County Police Department in August.

The funeral for a first-year Clayton County Police officer killed in the line of duty this week will take place Friday at East Cobb's Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. Sean Callahan, 24, who joined the force in August, died early Tuesday after being shot twice in the head while responding to a domestic dispute at a motel in Stockbridge on Monday afternoon. He graduated in 2006 from Lassiter High School, where he was a varsity swimmer, and also attended Mabry Middle School. A Lassiter guidance counselor told The Marietta Daily Journal that Callahan expressed to her an interest in studying criminal justice. Buy Holy Smoke Tickets By Friday

Johnson Ferry Baptist Church's annual Labor Day BBQ and Music Festival is just around the corner.

The deadline for advance tickets for Johnson Ferry Baptist Church's Labor Day Holy Smoke BBQ and Music Festival is Friday. All advance tickets must be purchased online. The event is Monday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and admission is free. The advance meals are $8 for adults and include BBQ pork or chicken, choice of side dishes, bread, dessert, drink, and a free Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich. The $5 children's meal includes a smaller portion of the adult meal and includes an all-day arm band (ride arm band is a $4 value). On-site food options include Williamson Bros. Sign-Up for Dog Days Run Continues

The deadline for online registration for Saturday's Rotary Club of East Cobb event is Thursday.

Early-bird runners for Saturday's Dog Days Run have until Thursday to save on the registration fee.  The Rotary Club of East Cobb's 5K/1-Mile Fun Run Event takes place at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. The online preregistration cost is $20; same-day registration will be $20. The cost for those wishing to sponsor a runner also is $25.  New to the race this year are cash prizes ($125) to overall male and female finisher in Open, Masters (40-49), Grand Masters (50-59) and Seniors (60+) events. Medals will be given for the top three finishers in 10 & Under, 11-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 & Over. Fun Runs and Craft Fairs

Getting out on this crisp, cool weekend? Here are highlights of what's happening in East Cobb.

Just before the holiday season gets started, a number of church craft fairs will be going on this weekend in East Cobb to get you in the mood.  The Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Craft Fair runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the church, located at 1770 Johnson Ferry Road. This is the 26th annual event sponsored by the Mt. Zion United Methodist Women. The work of more than 50 artists will be on display, along with prizes, a bake sale and more. Free admission.  On Saturday, Faith Lutheran Church is holding the Faith Craft Shoppe.
