Wheeler Fades, Falls in Hawaiian Finale

Lexington Catholic beats Wheeler for 5th place in the Iolani Classic, 66-57

HONOLULU—Taylor Martin scored 11 unanswered points in a late span of 2 minutes, 36 seconds Tuesday night to help Lexington (KY) Catholic surge pastWheeler, 66-57, for fifth place in the 27th annual 'Iolani Prep Classic. Wheeler went 2-2 on its trip way out west and finished sixth in the 16-team tournament. Oak Hill (Mouth of Wilson, VA), ranked No. 1 in the nation by ESPN Rise and USA Today, defeated USA Today's No. 25 team, Montverde (FL), 58-44, for the championship. Wheeler Bounces Back in Hawaii

Wildcats to play for fifth place in 'Iolani Classic after downing home team.

HONOLULU – Bouncing back from their first loss of the season, the Wheeler boys basketball team took down host 'Iolani, 73-50 Monday to advance to tonight's fifth-place game of the 'Iolani Prep Classic boys basketball tournament. The Wildcats will face Lexington (Ky.) Catholic at 10 p.m. (EST) Tuesday.  Junior forward Charles Mitchell scored a game-high 27 points for Wheeler, which lost to Dr. Phillips (Orlando), 63-62, in Saturday night's quarterfinals. In that game, the Wildcats led, 62-61, but turned the ball over with 22 seconds remaining and watched Darius Andrews score the winning basket with 7.5 seconds left. Wheeler Loses in Hawaii

Wildcats lose lead in final minute, fall 63-62 to Orlando team.

HONOLULU—Darius Andrews scored on a layup with 7.5 seconds remaining Saturday night to lift Dr. Phillips to a 63-62 victory over Wheeler in the quarterfinals of the 28th annual 'Iolani Prep Classic boys basketball tournament. Wheeler will face host 'Iolani, Hawaii's defending state champion, Monday at 8:30 p.m. East Cobb time (3:30 in Honolulu) in a consolation bracket game. Dr. Phillips, an Orlando school ranked No. 45 in the nation by ESPN Rise, will face No. 1 Oak Hill from Mouth of Wilson, VA, in Monday's semifinals. Wheeler High School jumped out to a 47-20 halftime lead and cruised to a 71-34 victory over Hawaii's Mililani High School in the Wildcats' opener in the Iolani Classic in Honolulu. Tevin Reeves scored 15 points to lead Wheeler, and Charles Mitchell added 14. Read the full game story here. 

Wheeler's Ambitions Reach Hawaii

The Wildcats are competing in the prestigious Iolani Classic tournament.

For years, Wheeler High School has been a pretty nice place to play basketball. But there's never been a better time to be part of the Wildcats' hoops team. The Wildcats left Tuesday for an out-of-town tournament, and they're bound for a warm-weather climate. And we're not talking about Valdosta. Or even Orlando. No, Wheeler's in Hawaii for a week, taking part in the 16-team Iolani Classic, which is drawing some of the big names in national high school basketball.  In addition to undefeated Wheeler, which defeated Mililani of Hawaii 71-34 late Thursday (game story; photo gallery) to start the tournament, the boys field includes the famed Oak Hill Academy in Virginia.
