New Playgrounds for East Cobb Schools

Funding for the projects at three elementary schools will come from SPLOST III contingency.

A contract to replace playgrounds at three East Cobb elementary schools has been approved by the Cobb Board of Education. The school board voted last Thursday to approve a $695,000 bid by Macon Construction Co. of Tampa for new playgrounds and surfacing projects at Murdock Elementary, Timber Ridge Elementary and Mt. Bethel Elementary. The work will be paid for with current SPLOST III cotningency funding. The project, which includes new playgrounds at Ford Elementary School in Acworth and Harmony Leland Elementary School in Mableton, came in at 58 percent over its initial $440,000 budget.  Chris Ragsdale, the Cobb County School district's deputy superintendent for operational support, told school board members the additional costs were …

East Side Elementary to 'Walk to School'

The East Cobb school will take part in next week's "Safe Route to School" observance.

From a press release sent by the East Side Elementary PTA: East Side Elementary in Cobb County will welcome spring by participating in Georgia Walk to School Day on Wednesday, March 6. Approximately 300 students and their families, will start walking or bicycling to school at 7 a.m., with walking school buses and bicycle trains arriving at school by 7:50 a.m. Once at school, prizes will be handed out. East Side joins East Cobb schools and schools across Georgia that are participating in the event. Messages from East Cobb Principals

Several schools have communicated with parents about safety procedures related to the Connecticut school shootings.

As education and law enforcement officials across the country respond to Friday's deadly school shootings in Connecticut, some principals of East Cobb schools sent special messages to parents over the weekend outlining safety measures and advice on talking with their children about the tragedy. At East Side Elementary School, principal Elizabeth Mavity reassured parents that "We work very hard on a daily basis to ensure that student safety is a priority." In addition to regular safety drills, Mavity wrote that "Our teachers will be instructed to be sensitive to the emotional needs of their students." East Side ES Meeting to Discuss Road Work

Representatives from Cobb DOT will be at the school from 2-4 Sunday to detail traffic improvements at Fairfield Drive and Indian Hills Parkway.

The Cobb Department of Transportation is holding an informational meeting Sunday at East Side Elementary School to provide details of an upcoming road maintenance project near the school entrance. Cobb DOT representatives will be available from 2-4 p.m. under the awning at the bus drop off-pick up area to outline planned road, sidewalk and median work at the intersection of Fairfield Drive and Indian Hills Parkway. East Side Honored for 'Safe Routes'

The East Cobb elementary school has been recognized for its walk to school safety efforts.

East Side Elementary School has been been recognized as a Partner of the Year for Northwest Georgia by the Georgia Safe Routes to School Resource Center. The East Cobb school participated International Walk to School Day, Georgia Walk to School Day and its own themed monthly walks. In cooperation with Safe Kids Cobb, East Side held their first Bike Rodeo in spring 2011. In the fall 2011, East Side kicked off its first Walking School Bus, with several students excited to start walking to school on a regular basis. Finally, to improve safety around the school and to reduce vehicular congestion overall, East Side encouraged parents who do not walk to have their children take the school bus.  Georgia Safe Routes also recognized School Champion…

Festival Time for East Cobb Schools

Several elementary schools are holding fall festivals and other special activities in the coming month to celebrate a new academic year.

Fall is in the air, and school festivals and other school-related special activities are ushering in a new school year at elementary schools around East Cobb.  We've got a few highlights from a very busy October, but if you'd like to add to this list please send your information to: wendy.parker@patch.com. On Saturday, Eastvalley Elementary School will hold its Fall Fair from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. with games, Zumba dancing, food, a DJ and other features.  Also on Saturday, and also from 2 p.m., the Octoberfest Bake Sale and Cake Walk takes place at Sope Creek Elementary School.
