Johnson Ferry/Woodlawn Traffic Changes Planned

Improvements prompted by a serious accident in March do not include a requested turn signal -- for now.

The Cobb Department of Transportation has begun making safety improvements at the intersection of Johnson Ferry Road and Woodlawn Drive following a horrific accident there earlier this spring. The changes include moving a stop bar to enable a near 90-degree left turn from northbound Johnson Ferry to southbound Woodlawn, instead of a much sharper turn that currently exists. But for the moment, there are no plans to install a green arrow to help motorists complete that turn. It's a turn a Kennesaw motorist was trying to make in the late afternoon of March 16 when his pickup truck struck a Lexus heading southbound on Johnson Ferry. A passenger in the Lexus, 22-year-old Kyle Lysaght of East Cobb, was seriously injured when his vehicle slammed …

Good to see that DOT will study this. I can't imagine that a "smart" left signal is impossible to do. If there are cars there, let them through on a short arrow. If not, just go all green. As far as backups, look at the light in Fulton at Roswell Road and Azalea. The way people barrel down the hill with a blind intersection, thank goodness it has a left arrow for people traveling northbound on …   more ›

East Cobb Speaks: TSPLOST Campaign

Part 2 of the pro-sales-tax campaign kicks off today. What do you think?

Citizens for Transportation Mobility is holding a news conference in Buckhead this morning to unveil its campaign urging voters in Cobb and nine other counties in metro Atlanta to approve the TSPLOST referendum July 31. “Traffic is killing jobs. Let’s untie the knot,” the new commercial says, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which got a preview. Unlike the education phase of the campaign for the 1-cent, 10-year regional transportation sales tax, the new push makes no effort to hide its desired outcome: approval of the tax. The tax would provide an estimated $6.14 billion for a list of regional road and transit projects, plus about $1 billion in Cobb-specific projects. Opponents of the tax lack the money and organization of …

Atlanta Gas Light Airs Things Out

Don't be alarmed today if you hear or smell something near the pipeline today.

Atlanta Gas Light's pipeline work could spread an odor and some noise this morning, but it's nothing to worry about. The company is purging a 24-inch pipeline from Powers Ferry Road at Interstate 285 to Willeo Road near the Chattahoochee River, The Marietta Daily Journal reported. The work could produce a loud roar and the smell of gas along the line, including Johnson Ferry Road at the river and at Lower Roswell Road, but there's no danger, an AGL spokesman told the MDJ. The purge is connected to the work disrupting traffic at Johnson Ferry and Lower Roswell roads for the next week or so.

TSPLOST Campaign Transforms Mail

The election on the regional sales tax is exactly four months away, and the bulk-mail brochures are starting to arrive.

TSPLOST proponents have a lot of work to do in the next four months if the reaction at East Cobb forums is an accurate reflection of public opinion about the regional 1-cent sales tax for transportation projects. That work is well underway. A glossy brochure (images attached) arrived in the mail at the satellite office of East Cobb Patch this afternoon from Transform Metro Atlanta, based in downtown Atlanta. Financed by the Metro Atlanta Voter Education Network, or MAVEN, the four-page brochure follows the suburban story line of the TV commercials you may have seen in favor of the Transportation Improvement Act: In short, as the tagline on the bag of the brochure say, "Less traffic = more time at home." What do you think of the brochure? …

TSPLOST Finds Foes in East Cobb

The July 31 transportation referendum took a lot of criticism during a forum Wednesday night.

The proposed TSPLOST faced a lot of flak in East Cobb last year as the project list—with its on-again, off-again light-rail line—headed toward completion. It looks as if feelings haven't softened with the vote now four months away. The July 31 referendum to create a regional transportation special-purpose, local-option sales tax came under attack during an Atlanta Regional Commission forum Wednesday night at the East Cobb Library, The Marietta Daily Journal reported. Among those who attended and declared their intentions to vote no July 31 were two men who plan to be on the Republican ballot for county commission chairman the same day, Larry Savage and Mike Boyce, the MDJ said. Both Savage and Boyce attended the February unveiling of the …

Cobb Explains Roundabout Plans

Neighbors remain unsure about the changes around Holly Springs and Davis roads.

Dozens of East Cobb residents brought questions and concerns to Monday night’s information session about the roundabout being installed in their neighborhood this summer. The Cobb County Department of Transportation is planning the county’s fourth roundabout at the intersection of Holly Springs and Davis roads. The work should start right after Memorial Day and last about two months, Cobb DOT construction manager Bob Galante said. Galante and Michael Cates were among the DOT experts who joined Northeast Cobb Commissioner JoAnn Birrell in explaining the plans, answering questions and taking suggestions during the two-hour open house at the East Cobb Senior Center. While many residents expressed skepticism about the construction and about …

Interested in seeing whether or not the adjustment will be made for the only residents on the four corners affected...since Cobb County owns the other three corners, will they be willing to give up property or is this something just forced down the throats of the residents? Are the residents being compensated for loss of property? For inconvenience of having to make a right and go around the …   more ›
