Pope Ousted by Stephenson

The Greyhounds' trip to the state football playoffs turned on fourth quarter turnovers on Saturday.

The Pope Greyhounds were staying close to Stephenson in the fourth quarter of Saturday's Class AAAAA first round playoff game. But four turnovers in that period were too much to overcome. As The Marietta Daily Journal reported, Stephenson scored 14 points off those turnovers to coast to a 31-11 victory. The Greyhounds end their season with a 7-4 record, and have gone to the playoffs for the last three seasons under coach Matt Kemper. Of the five East Cobb-area teams that made the playoffs, only Kell remains. On Friday, Lassiter, Walton, and Wheeler all were defeated in Class AAAAAA. And Kell had to dig out a 19-14 win over Southwest DeKalb in the final minute of play on Friday. The Longhorns will play host to Gainesville this coming …

Wheeler Earns Football Playoff Berth

Find out who the Wildcats, Walton, Pope and Lassiter will be playing in the first round of the state playoffs next weekend.

By a single point on the scoreboard and a few fractions of a percentage point on a calculator, Wheeler High School is back in the state football playoffs for the first time in six years. A cliffhanging 21-20 win at Cherokee was just enough for the Wildcats to claim the fourth and final post-season bid from Region 5-AAAAAA. Wheeler also needed help in other games and got that when Etowah and Woodstock lost on Friday. As The Marietta Daily Journal indicated in this morning's editions, Wheeler won the tiebreaker over those schools by virtue of its .500 winning percentage against Class AAAAAA teams, going 4-4. Etowah and Woodstock were both under .500 in those games. While the Wildcats (6-4, 3-4) are enjoying their accomplishment today, a …

Congratulations to Wheeler and Coach Collins on the winning record and the playoffs. Grayson will be tough, but with Staley and Beal, the Wildcats always have a puncher's chance. And the playoff experience should set the Cats up for a run at the region title in 2013.   more ›

Walton, Lassiter, Pope, Kell on a Roll

Playoff spots are taking shape after Friday night's high school football games.

While the national spotlight was focused on Walton's game with Milton on Friday, all other East Cobb schools were battling for playoff spots, or firming up post-season positioning. Walton put on a defensive show to down Milton 27-7 in a game played on ESPNU. The Raiders, 6-2 overall and 4-1 in Region 5-AAAAAA, used turnovers to lead to most of their scoring plays. The win helped Walton keep pace in region play with Lassiter, the No. 2 team in Class AAAAAA. The Trojans (8-0, 5-0) jumped out to an early lead against Wheeler and got four more touchdown passes from Eddie Printz in a 38-23 win. Pope also has developed a penchant for grinding out wins with good defense, as the Greyhounds (6-2, 3-0) showed again Friday in a 13-10 win over …

Can Wheeler End Walton's Dominance?

The Raiders have won five in a row against their East Cobb rivals and 10 of their last 11 meetings.

The scorelines have been as one-sided in favor of Walton as they've been forgettable for Wheeler. The two East Cobb schools once enjoyed a healthy, competitive rivalry on the football field. That started to change in the late 1990s, as the Raiders began building one of the top prep programs in metro Atlanta, and as the Wildcats fell into sharp decline. Over the last decade, the gap has become vast. A year ago, Walton rolled all over Wheeler in a sweet Homecoming result on its way to the state championship game. Through the first half of this season, Wheeler has shown it's more competitive than in recent years. The Wildcats will play host to Walton at 7:30 tonight in a game that has more than East Cobb bragging rights on the line. There's a…

Lassiter 'D' Stops Walton Streak

The Trojans won a rugged defensive contest in their East Cobb rivalry game Friday.

What might have been billed an offensive treat turned into a gritty defensive struggle.  The Lassiter Trojans nursed a slight lead in the second half Friday and used their defensive muscle to hold off the Walton Raiders and claim a 21-9 victory.  The so-called "East Cobb Super Bowl" featured two high-powered offenses and teams ranked in the Top 10 in Class AAAAAA. But the Trojans forced three turnovers, two of them from defensive back Patrick Levandoski at critical times, to stave off Walton's rally and win their Homecoming game.  Levandoski intercepted a pass as Walton was driving deep in the fourth quarter, and also forced a fumble by Raiders running star Tyren Jones that halted another possible touchdown drive with the game on the line…

Walton vs. Lassiter: The Rivalry

The "East Cobb Super Bowl" will be renewed Friday, but this is about a lot more than a football game.

Of course it's a football game.  When two of the Top 10 teams in Class AAAAAA get together, it's a very big football game.  As both of their meetings were last year, including the state semifinals.  But when Walton High School and Lassiter High School square off in anything, it's more than the "East Cobb Super Bowl" in football terms.  In addition to their multi-sport athletic prowess, Walton and Lassiter will be boasting their highly touted marching bands.  And both are among the top academic high schools in Cobb County and Georgia.  Tonight's game at Lassiter's Frank Fillman Stadium is also Homecoming for the Trojans, with a parade veering down Shallowford Road from the Home Depot on Sandy Plains Road to the school starting at 5:30 p.m…
