Messages from East Cobb Principals

Several schools have communicated with parents about safety procedures related to the Connecticut school shootings.

As education and law enforcement officials across the country respond to Friday's deadly school shootings in Connecticut, some principals of East Cobb schools sent special messages to parents over the weekend outlining safety measures and advice on talking with their children about the tragedy. At East Side Elementary School, principal Elizabeth Mavity reassured parents that "We work very hard on a daily basis to ensure that student safety is a priority." In addition to regular safety drills, Mavity wrote that "Our teachers will be instructed to be sensitive to the emotional needs of their students." Mavity is asking that staff members "not discuss the tragedy in detail with students, but rather reassure them that we work hard daily to …

East Cobb SPLOST IV Project List

A detailed look at proposed construction and maintenance work before Cobb voters in the March 2013 referendum.

While the big-ticket items on the March 2013 Cobb Education SPLOST referendum have been getting most of the attention, every school in the Cobb County School District is slated for improvements.  The Cobb Board of Education called for the referendum earlier this month and set a date for the vote on March 19, 2013. The biggest school-specific earmark of all is in East Cobb -- nearly $40 million for Walton High School -- as well as nearly $30 million for an East Cobb-area replacement middle school.  What follows is a detailed look at what each school in East Cobb -- ZIP codes 30062, 30067 and 30068 -- would be getting if Cobb voters approve the $717 million extension of the one-cent SPLOST, which would begin collection for five years …

Eastvalley Parents Express SPLOST Concerns

The future of four older East Cobb elementary schools dominated discussion at a town hall meeting Monday.

The proposed "SPLOST IV" project list for the Cobb County School District includes nearly $70 million in funding to fully replace three unspecified elementary schools. At a town hall meeting Monday night, parents representing one East Cobb elementary school wanted to know if the "TBD" designation might apply to them. And if it doesn't, they wondered how money would be found for improvements to a facility that's more than 50 years old.  Parents with children attending Eastvalley Elementary School didn't get all the answers they were looking for at the meeting, which was held at Wheeler High School. Cobb Board of Education chairman Scott Sweeney, who represents the Eastvalley attendance area, repeatedly told the audience of around 50 …

Dickerson Teacher 'Humbled' by Honor

Life sciences teacher Rick Kaht was named the Cobb Middle School Teacher of the Year on Friday.

Dr. Rick Kaht sat down with his fellow Dickerson Middle School teachers Friday morning for what he was told would be a briefing of the school's recent student test scores.  It was to be a busy day at Dickerson, the final full planning day for teachers before school begins on Monday. By mid-morning Friday, students and parents would arrive for meet-and-greet sessions. Only a few people inside the auditorium knew the teachers' meeting was arranged to specifically honor him.  When Cobb schools superintendent Michael Hinojosa unfurled a t-shirt bearing Kaht's name as the county's 2012-13 Middle School Teacher of the Year, words failed him -- for a change.  "I was shocked, I was speechless for probably the first time in my life," said Kaht, the…

Sprayberry Principal Appointed at Kell

The Cobb Board of Education made a number of personnel appointments on Thursday night.

The Cobb Board of Education on Thursday voted to appoint Sprayberry High School principal Ed Wagner to the same position at Kell High School.  Wagner has been principal at Sprayberry for the last two years and has been in the administration there for the last eight years.  He succeeds Trudie Donovan, who retired abruptly in June, and was charged last month with violating state law by not reporting an allegation of child abuse within 24 hours. A former Kell social studies teacher, James Chadwick Brigham, is facing charges of battery and sexual battery following complaints by two students near the end of the school year in May.  Wagner begins at Kell on Monday.  The school board also made the following appointments Thursday across the Cobb …

Lassiter Renovations Almost Complete

The two-year upgrade should be finished before the new school year, with occupation by August.

Students returning to Lassiter High School for the 2012-2013 school year will be greeted by the sights of a new theater, media center, and parking areas, part of a massive renovation project paid for by SPLOST dollars. "Lassiter is going to become the 'Crown Jewel' of the Cobb County School District," said the district's SPLOST Director of Program Management and Accountability Glen Brown. Changes to the school include modifying the existing administration areas, updating the HVAC systems to current standards, new lighting, and repaving the parking areas. Modifications to the traffic pattern will also be included in order to acommodate the new theater. The project began in February, 2010 with the appointment of an architect to design the …

East Cobb Schools Boost CRCT Scores

Nine of 16 schools had 100-percent passing rates in at least one category of the 2012 tests.

East Cobb students rate among the best in the Cobb County School District in the 2012 results of the Criterion Referenced Competency tests released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Education.  Students in grades 3-8 at the elementary and middle school level were tested in April in five academic categories: reading, English/language arts, math, science and social studies.  The tests are a crucial part of determining whether or not a school meets its Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) goals, but the importance of this 12-year-old test will diminish in the coming years as Georgia schools transition to the Common Core Curriculum, which is being implemented by 47 states. According to figures reported by the Marietta Daily Journal, Cobb third …
