The Cobb Board of Education on Wednesday accepted the retirement request of Murdock Elementary School principal Cynthia Hanauer. She is a longtime East Cobb resident and educator, having attended Eastvalley Elementary School and East Cobb Middle School and graduating from Wheeler High School before beginning her career in education.

The first test of Georgia's alternative to No Child Left Behind has yielded fairly good marks for the Cobb County School District and excellent results for a number of schools in East Cobb. According to the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI), students at the elementary, middle and high school levels in the Cobb district surpassed the state average on a wide-ranging accountability spectrum. A "Night of the Arts" performance will highlight the April 18 celebration.
The sound of music will be in the air on the evening of Thursday, April 18 as the Hightower Trail Middle School community will celebrate the school's 20th anniversary. The "Night of the Arts" program will include seven small ensembles from the school band in the music wing. The event takes place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The school is located at 3905 Post Oak Tritt Road in East Cobb. The HTMS orchestra's chamber ensemble and choral groups will perform as well. Eighty-seven percent of students in the Cobb County School District met or surpassed standards in the winter 2013 state Eighth Grade Writing Test, according to a figures released by the district Monday. Cobb has the highest percentage of students of any school district in the metro Atlanta area reaching or surpassing the state benchmark, and it is one point above 2012 Cobb results. The Cobb County School District's assistant superintendent for part of the East Cobb area is retiring right before the start of the 2013-14 school year. The Cobb Board of Education on Wednesday approved the retirement request of Ed Thayer, who coordinates school operations in Area 4, which includes the Kell, Lassiter and Sprayberry high school districts and 17 feeder schools. He will leave the district Aug. 1 after 37 years in education, including 21 in Cobb schools, according to The Marietta Daily Journal, which reported that his position may not be filled to save money. The deadline for applying for a Margie Hatfield Scholarship given by the East Cobb County Council PTA is fast approaching. High school students from all six high schools in the East Cobb area -- Kell, Lassiter, Pope, Sprayberry, Walton and Wheeler -- need to apply by Feb. 25. A student from each of the schools will receive $1,000 toward their college educations. The East Cobb County Council PTA created the Margie Hatfield Scholarship Fund to honor the dedication and years of service given by Mrs. Hatfield to the youth of the Council PTA. She is a Past President of the organization who served three consecutive terms. It is with this service in mind that the Council PTA sponsors the scholarship program. Students in the Cobb County School District tested slightly lower overall in the most recent Iowa Test of Basic Skills from a year ago but those results remain above the national average. According to figures released Thursday by the CCSD, the composite percentile scores for third, fifth and seventh graders dropped a point at each grade level from the fall of 2011. Third graders’ average composite scores ranked in the 68th percentile, meaning that Cobb third graders scored equal to or better than 68 percent of all other U.S. third grade students who participated in the test. Composite scores for Cobb fifth graders ranked in the 65th percentile and the district's seventh graders came in the 62nd percentile. Students at East Cobb schools …
