Lane closures on Paper Mill Road continue this week; replacement work begins May 28.
Preparations continue this week for the replacement of the Sope Creek Bridge on Paper Mill Road. Starting next Tuesday, May 28, East Cobb motorists will not be able to use that portion of the road for around four months, including the start of the 2013-14 school year. The $1.4 million project will include a complete replacement of the aging bridge and the construction of a six-foot-wide sidewalk on the south side of Paper Mill Road for access to National Park Service trails. This week utility work continues on Paper Mill Road near the bridge. Occasional lane closures will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. The following information has been provided by the office of District 2 Cobb Commissioner Bob Ott: Lower Roswell Road Construction Little Willeo Road Sidewalks Construction May 2013 Paper Mill Road Bridge Replacement I-285 Top-End Resurfacing Project - GDOT Georgia DOT continues working on a $56 million resurfacing project on I-285. Crews will resurface 10 miles of I-285 between Paces Ferry Road in Cobb County and Ashford Dunwoody Road in DeKalb County. Most work will take place nights and weekends. East Cobb residents got their first detailed look Tuesday night at plans to replace the aging Paper Mill Road bridge over Sope Creek. The four-month project, which will begin the day after school lets out in May, will cost $1.4 million from leftover 2005 SPLOST funds but is necessary, East Cobb Commissioner Bob Ott said during a town hall meeting at Sope Creek Elementary School. The new bridge will feature an earth tone-colored stone veneer to blend in with the environment, replacing concrete piers planted in the creekbed. The replacement will be wider and will include a sidewalk, which doesn't exist now. "The bridge is safe right now, but it needs to be rebuilt," Ott said to a gathering of more than 100 citizens.
