Volunteer Helps Job-Weary

For the past three years, Maxine Hess has led the Job Support Network at Temple Kol Emeth in East Cobb.

When the resession began several years ago, Maxine Hess heard a few people at her East Cobb synagogue talking about losing their jobs. But she knew there were even more out there. "This wasn't gonna be just two or three people," Hess said. "I knew it was going to be big." With a background in career development and leadership coaching, she figured maybe she could be of some help. And so the Job Support Network was born at Temple Kol Emeth. "It has been a wonderful uplifting program for people," said Denise Jacobs, senior administrator at Temple Kol Emeth. "It is to benefit the community and that's an important part of who the synogogue is as a whole." In the beginning, the group met every week, then twice a month and now just once a month…

Will Cobb Tip TSPLOST Vote?

A new poll shows some softening in metro Atlanta areas long known for resistance to increasing public transit options.

Given the hostility at a recent public hearing in East Cobb to the proposed metro Atlanta regional transportation SPLOST, the results of a new poll suggesting changing attitudes in key suburban areas may be surprising.  As The Atlanta Journal-Constitution detailed the poll results Monday, the passage of the TSPLOST next summer could hinge on how the vote goes down in Cobb and Gwinnett. Voters in the 10-county TSPLOST area will either approve or reject the penny sales tax across the board, regardless of the results in individual counties. The Mason-Dixon results showed support for TSPLOST from 51 percent of voters polled, with slightly less than half in favor in Cobb.  Both Cobb and Gwinnett famously refused to join MARTA when the public …

So a bunch of unelected bureacrats at the Atlanta Regional Commission and the Chamber of Commerce demand that we in Cobb tax ourselves for 10 years to pay for a light rail TROLLEY (not train) for Atlanta-Fulton. You gotta be kiddin'. Read the Marietta Daily Journal article just published "Price tosses cold water on Fed help talk for light rail II" by Jon Gilloolhy. See what you think. Read more: …   more ›

East Cobb Take Five

Welcoming Hinojosa; Keeping the Music Live

The East Cobb Take Five for Thursday, Aug. 4.

1. In case you've literally been in a very cool and comfortable cave, it's a tad on the warm side these days, hot and humid enough for Cobb schools to limit when sports teams and marching bands can practice outdoors.  The new guidelines issued Wednesday, and which are in effect indefinitely, block out the noon-to-6 pm. window for those activities. 2. Thursday won't be providing much relief, with highs reaching 97 to 98 and a heat index between 104-108, a figure that's starting to jump off the charts. A heat advisory has been issued through 8 p.m. today, but don't let your guard down after the sun goes down. Friday is expected to be the same, and you don't want us to detail the long-term forecast, because you likely won't notice the drop of…
