Johnson Ferry Road Design Unveiled

Corridor project guidelines were presented to East Cobb residents Wednesday night.

Nearly two years after the approval of the Johnson Ferry Urban Design Plan, East Cobb residents on Wednesday got a closer look at proposed Road Design guidelines for the project. At an informational meeting attended by around 50 people at the East Cobb Library, Cobb officials provided details for the portion of the Johnson Ferry Road corridor south from Roswell Road to the Chattahoochee River. The provision that drew substantial interest would have business owners incorporate such amenities as street lights, widened sidewalks, trees, green buffers and other improvements into their plans if their property comes up for redevelopment. Existing business owners who do not go through the rezoning process will not affected. "A guideline is a …

Questions Linger for Backyard Chicken Foes

Cobb commissioner JoAnn Birrell explained the ordinance change to the East Cobb Civic Association.

The day after the Cobb Board of Commissioners voted to adjust its code for chicken owners on small residential lots, opponents of the measure still had plenty of questions. At a Wednesday meeting of the East Cobb Civic Association, District 3 commissioner JoAnn Birrell outlined the new policy before an audience that wasn't thrilled to absorb the news. The ECCA opposed the changes, which would permit owners to apply for a variance that would allow them to keep one female chicken -- no roosters -- per 5,000 square feet of property. Applicants also must provide written consent from two adjacent neighbors, either in support of or in opposition to their petition. Birrell and Cobb Commission Chairman Tim Lee voted against the change, but it …

East Cobb Health Park Moves Forward

Roswell Road access plans were presented to a citizens' committee this month; groundbreaking is scheduled for March.

The final presentation by the WellStar Health System for its East Cobb Health Park before next month's groundbreaking has eased some of the major concerns of nearby residents. At an East Cobb citizens advisory committee meeting earlier this month, the Marietta health care provider detailed revised plans that address traffic, density and architectural issues that have marked nearly three years of discussions and haggling. Perhaps the biggest change by WellStar was creating traffic access on Roswell Road instead of Providence Road West, part of the initial proposal which had drawn significant opposition. The size of the $73 million, three-story, general service outpatient facility on 23 acres has been reduced from 205,000 square feet to 162,…

His remarks will begin at 7 p.m. at the East Cobb Government Services Center, 4400 Lower Roswell Road. A general membership meeting will follow. Lee delivered his official State of the County address to the Cobb Chamber of Commerce last week; see the accompanying video for the full speech. Over the weekend The Marietta Daily Journal reported that Lee is requesting a three percent raise for county officials, just as county employees received late last year. Taxes, TSPLOST On Candidates' Minds

The three Republicans challenging Cobb Commission Chairman Tim Lee took issue with his stances on both at Wednesday's forum in East Cobb.

For the second time in as many days, the four Republicans running for Cobb Commission Chairman sounded off on what appears to be the most pressing issues during their two-month primary campaign -- property tax increases and the upcoming TSPLOST regional transportation referendum.  In a Wednesday forum at the East Cobb Library sponsored by the East Cobb Civic Association, the three challengers to incumbent Tim Lee all took aim at his vote last year to raise the county millage rate. They also questioned his general support for the TSPLOST referendum, which is included on the July 31 primary ballot.  Former chairman Bill Byrne, Mike Boyce and Larry Savage, who ran against Lee in 2010 in the Republican race to succeed Sam Olens, all said the …

Hey, since some believe politicians do such a great job with our money...why not give them all or our money? Here's their logic. We have a problem. Ignore all the warning signs of how the money is currently spent. Don't demand accountability, and somehow believe that this time, more money will suddenly solve our problems. We don't need no stinking plans. Simply trust and obey. Blind faith in …   more ›

TSPLOST Town-Hall Meeting Cancelled

Tuesday's scheduled event at the Mountain View Community Center has been called off because of a candidates' forum in Marietta.

Tuesday night's town-hall meeting organized by State House candidate JoEllen Smith about the proposed TSPLOST has been cancelled.  Smith told Patch.com she was calling off her event because of a Cobb candidates debate and forum tonight in Marietta.  That forum, organized by the Cobb NAACP, starts at 7 p.m. at the Cobb government building on 100 Cherokee Street. The NAACP forum also will be shown on TV 23, the Cobb government public access cable outlet.  Smith's town-hall meeting was scheduled for the Mountain View Community Center and was to have focused on the July 31 one-percent regional transportation sales tax referendum.  "This debate was scheduled after mine but it is more extensive and I didn't wish to detract from it," said Smith, …
