Observing Rosh Hashanah in East Cobb

The High Holy Days begin with Sunday services at Temple Kol Emeth, Congregation Etz Chaim and Chabad of Cobb.

This Sunday, as the day draws to a close, the Jewish community will ring in year 5773 as part of its celebration of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. The festivities will continue until nightfall on Tuesday, Sept. 18. East Cobb's three synagogues -- Temple Kol Emeth, Congregation Etz Chaim and Chabad of Cobb -- will have services and observances from Sunday through Tuesday.   Rosh Hashanah, which literally means “head of the year,” signals the beginning of the High Holy Days. Yom Kippur, or Day of Atonement, marks the end, on Sept. 25-26, and together they are two of the holiest days for Jews. Like most New Year celebrations, Rosh Hashanah is a time of introspection and a time to bring about changes in the coming year. The traditional …

Small Business Q&A: DJ Neezy Entertainment

This East Cobb disc jockey works to get all party goers on the dance floor.

Ben Needle, a.k.a. DJ Neezy, admits, "I just love music and I love dancing. Being a DJ brings revenue and good times together for me." When not at a birthday party encouraging small children to wiggle their hands in the air, Needle may be at Kell High School teaching social studies or at Congregation Etz Chaim teaching Hebrew or Judaic studies to 6th graders. Needle's alias, DJ Neezy, is derived from a name Kell students gave him when the class produced a rap video as part of their studies. "I asked my students what I could do to help them learn better and one young man suggested we make a music video. We did and it was fun." 2002 Needle earned a Master of Education at University of Georgia and then was hired by Kell, which made Needle a …

Observing Purim at Etz Chaim

Students at the East Cobb synagogue's preschool have been learning about the annual celebration by making cookies, among other goodies.

Purim is celebrated anually with the reading of the Book of Ester (Megillah).  Traditions include wearing costumes, eating triangular shaped cookies called Hammentashen, and shaking noise-makers (groggers). The "Cool Cats" students at East Cobb's Congregation Etz Chaim recently took part in the observance, which celebrates the Jews being saved from extermination in ancient Persia.
