A pedestrian crossing Cobb Parkway near Allgood Road died Monday night after being hit by a car, according to Marietta Police. The male victim's name is being withheld pending notification of kin, according to police. The accident occurred around 8:55 p.m. Monday when a maroon 2001 Mercedes 320 was heading southbound on Cobb Parkway, just north of Allgood Road. The vehicle struck the pedestrian, who police said was crossing Cobb Parkway outside of the crosswalk. The pedestrian was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he died, according to police. The driver of the Mercedes was identified as Diane Sherman, 56, of Marietta, but police said no charges are expected to be filed, and no other injuries were reported. Southbound traffic on…

A chemical spill from an overturned truck has shut down a portion of Cobb Parkway Monday afternoon. Marietta Police issued an alert at 3:20 p.m. Monday saying that Cobb Parkway is closed in both directions between Allgood Road and Bells Ferry Road "till further notice" because of a chemical spill from an overturned truck. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a truck carrying 50,000 pounds of sodium hydroxide overturned at Cobb Parkway and Industrial Park Drive, near the Canton Road interchange. The report indicated that a nearby motel and business were evacuated as a precaution. Police expect Cobb Parkway to be closed "well into the evening time" and that motorists should seek alternative routes.

The windy weather that has most of metro Atlanta under a wind advisory is affecting traffic near a busy intersection of Windy Hill Road. The Marietta Police Department issued an advisory at 5:24 p.m. Monday indicating that a power outage on Windy Hill Road near Cobb Parkway caused by heavy winds has also taken out some traffic signals in the area. The advisory indicated that estimated repairs "could take three hours." While the East Coast was bracing for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, the strong winds stemming from the massive storm are affecting weather patterns throughout much of the Eastern part of the country. Local transportation and recreational improvements that would be funded if referendum passes.
Cobb voters have been casting early ballots in the 2011 SPLOST referendum, which will be decided on March 15. The proposed four-year, $492 million extension, if passed, would take effect in January 2012. Last week, supporters and opponents of the extension debated the issue during a forum sponsored by the Marietta-Cobb League of Women Voters. What follows is a list of East Cobb-specific projects -- totalling around $55 million -- that would be funded directly if the referendum passes. It does not include countywide transportation, recreation, facilities and public safety projects, nor does it list projects that need state or federal funding.
