Mountain View Aquatic Center Closed Until October

The county-run facility will be undergoing renovations from July 5 to mid-October.

The Mountain View Aquatic Center won't be available to the public during the height -- and the heat -- of the summer months.  That's because the facility, located off Sandy Plains Road at 2650 Gordy Parkway, is undergoing renovations for at least the next three months, according to the Cobb County Parks, Recreation, Cultural Affairs Department. A message on the center's website indicates the Mountain View complex is slated to re-open on Oct. 15, but the date could be sooner.  Aquarobic water exercise classes have been relocated the Cobb Central Aquatics Center on Fairground Street in Marietta, next to the Cobb Civic Center.  Other swimming lessons and lap swimming and open swimming sessions are available at the Central facility, as well as…

Cobb Redistricting Maps on Agenda

The Cobb County commissioners meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday for a work session including the final report from the Citizens Advisory Committee. The regular board meeting is at 7 p.m., 100 Cherokee St., Marietta.

The state House of Representatives voted a week ago to accept new district lines for Cobb County. But the issue is on the commissioners agenda Tuesday night. Commissioner Woody Thompson is upset because Mableton, which was in his district, will now be split into two different districts — his and Commissioner Bob Ott's, which stretches from East Cobb to Smyrna.  Thompson was joined by Commissioner JoAnne Birrell at the last meeting, Feb. 14, in adding a new map to the agenda at the last minute. The new map would keep all of Mableton in Thompson's district. Birrell told the Marietta Daily Journal that revisions could be made to the map before it is voted on by the state Senate. Chairman Tim Lee and Commissioner Helen Goreham said at the Feb…

Lee Told Police Leaving for Other Jobs

While Cobb has a “great police department . . .we do have some problems,” retired deputy chief Bill Mull said at the commission chairman's town hall meeting Monday.

With almost five years since a pay increase for county employees, Cobb is losing members of its police force to other agencies, retired Deputy Police Chief Bill Mull told Cobb Commission Chairman Tim Lee during Monday night's town hall meeting in West Cobb.  There is a “great police department here (in Cobb), but we do have some problems,” said Mull, who spent 42 years on the force, retiring in 2008, and is the president of Cobb’s Fraternal Order of Police chapter. He added: “We spend lots of money recruiting employees, we spend lots of money a year training them … and then we lose them to go to other agencies.” Mull said new municipalities, like those in northern Fulton County, are “stealing our employees.” For Cobb, recent furloughs were…

Ott to Propose Code Changes

District 2 commissioner addressed property values and economic development issues a during Thursday town hall meeting in Smyrna.

At last night’s District 2 Town Hall meeting in Smyrna, Cobb commissioner Bob Ott announced that he’d be proposing about 200 pages-worth of changes to the county code that impede redevelopment at next Tuesday’s Cobb County board of commissioners meeting. Ott, who will have another town hall meeting next Wednesday at the East Cobb Library, emphasized that the changes he would be suggesting to the board apply only to redevelopment and not new development. Ott said that at last year’s staff retreat he asked the community development agency to examine the county development code to identify all the measures that impede redevelopment. He explained that these measures were originally intended to protect undeveloped land and that when the code …

Airport May Get Customs Agent

Right now, if a private plane flies into the area from outside the country, it is not allowed to land at McCollum Airport.

Adding a customs agent at Cobb County's airport is on the agenda for the commissioners' meeting Tuesday. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has notified the county that Cobb County Airport-McCollum Field is eligible for inclusion in the User Fee Aiport Program. Such airports receive, for a fee, customs services to process aircraft, passengers, and cargo entering the country. If approved, a full time customs officer will be stationed at McCullum. The county will have to reimburse CBP $140,874 for the first year, and $123,438, for succeeding years. Commissioner Bob Ott, who is a non-voting member of the Airport Advisory Board, told the Marietta Daily Journal that the lack of a customs agent has kept the airport from maximizing its …
