The same knowledge provided to students can be applied to home gardens as well. The students learned the following fall planting tips:

The future of four older East Cobb elementary schools dominated discussion at a town hall meeting Monday.
The proposed "SPLOST IV" project list for the Cobb County School District includes nearly $70 million in funding to fully replace three unspecified elementary schools. At a town hall meeting Monday night, parents representing one East Cobb elementary school wanted to know if the "TBD" designation might apply to them. And if it doesn't, they wondered how money would be found for improvements to a facility that's more than 50 years old. Parents with children attending Eastvalley Elementary School didn't get all the answers they were looking for at the meeting, which was held at Wheeler High School. Cobb Board of Education chairman Scott Sweeney, who represents the Eastvalley attendance area, repeatedly told the audience of around 50 …

A group of boys from a gender-based class at Brumby Elementary School learned about video game design Wednesday at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta. The students, who are in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade, are part of "H.I.T. Squad" of teacher Lazetta Hankerson, aka the "Hankerson Institute of Technology." Their visit to the Southern Poly Gaming Department included a tour of the facilities and the basics of computer gaming with faculty member Dr. Jon Preston. The focus was on games involving the study of the solar system. The questions involved included: How do the Earth and its Moon move; what objects are in the Solar System; and, what can we see in the sky? Marka Ormbsy and Robin Daniel of Southern Poly's Tech Matters …

Brumby Elementary School and East Cobb Middle School were designated as "focus" schools by the Georgia Department of Education Tuesday and will receive additional state funding to boost student achievement. The new designation, which applies to 156 schools around the state, was required as part of the state's recent waiver from certain No Child Left Behind mandates. Focus schools, as Maureen Downey of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution noted, are those that have graduation rates of less than 60 percent and are not on the priority list, which was issued last week and is for the worst-performing schools (none in East Cobb). According to the Georgia DOE, Brumby and East Cobb Middle were placed on the focus school list because they have large…

Representing East Cobb will be Brumby, Shallowford Falls and Tritt elementary schools, and Dodgen and Hightower Trail middle schools. Mabry Middle School and Sprayberry High School from Northeast Cobb also will be involved in the academic competition. Nearly one-third of all schools will be partipating in the 5th annual Reading Bowl, named for a former DeKalb County school media specialist who was looking for a way to motivate the students at her school to read more. High school students must read the nominated books for the Georgia Teen Peach Book Award. Middle and elementary students must read the …

Three East Cobb elementary schools -- Brumby, Powers Ferry and Sedalia Park -- are among the 25 from Cobb and more than 800 around the state that have been named Georgia Title I Distinguished Schools. The schools were named on Thursday by the Georgia Department of Education. The program is designed to honor high-performing Title I schools that receive additional federal funding and services to support economically disadvantaged students. To earn the Title I Distinguished School designation a school must make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for three consecutive school years. Schools that make AYP four or more consecutive years receive a monetary award, paid from federal Title I funds.

After barely missing out on Adequate Yearly Progress goals after the 2010-11 school year, three East Cobb schools have reached those targets based on results of summer testing. Brumby Elementary School, Powers Ferry Elementary School and Wheeler High School were among the nine Cobb County School District schools that were added to the AYP list as approved by the Georgia Department of Education. Those three schools barely missed AYP status in the spring, but the state revises its lists based on retests of the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test at the elementary and middle school levels and updated graduation rates at the high school level. Wheeler missed the AYP by just one graduate, while Brumby and Powers Ferry met all but one of the …
