2 East Cobb Restaurants Closing

The Empress of China II will serve its last meals on Monday; Botekim Brazilian Bistro has already shuttered its doors.

Two East Cobb restaurants -- one a longtime part of the local dining scene and the other considered a new, rising star -- have closed or will be closing.  The Empress of China II, located in the Market Plaza Shopping Center at 1255 Johnson Ferry Road, is closing on Monday after 32 years in East Cobb.  A notice on the restaurant's website said the closing was due to "the current financial climate" and the retirement of the owners.  The food blog Atlanta Eater reported on Wednesday that Botekim Brazilian Bistro has closed its doors, leaving a note in the door thanking patrons and informing them of the news.  The brainchild of former Sal Grosso chef and Brazilian immigrant Alex DeGrossi, Botekim opened last July to rave reviews (East Cobb …

Best of East Cobb: Botekim Bistro

This Brazilian restaurant on Terrell Mill Road was the runaway winner of our readers' poll of favorite Latin American cuisine.

One of East Cobb's newest restaurants has been rated the best for Latin American cuisine, and it wasn't all that close.  The Botekim Brazilian Bistro, located at the corner of Terrell Mill Road and Powers Ferry Road, was an easy winner in this week's "Best of East Cobb" readers' poll.  Botekim, which was opened last summer by former Sal Grosso chef Alex DeGrossi, received 68 votes, or 54 percent of the 125 votes cast in the poll.  Finishing a strong second was the Cuban Diner located in the East Marietta Shopping Center, which earned 33 votes, or 26 percent of the total.  The Cazadores Mexican restaurant in the Shallowford Falls Shopping Center was third with five votes.  DeGrossi describes his menu as "authentic Brazilian comfort food." …

Affordable Fine Dining at Botekim

East Cobb's newest Brazilian restaurant offers a "delightfully different" menu from traditional churrascaria fare.

Overview: When I learned there was a new Brazilian restaurant in East Cobb, Botekim Brazilian Bistro on Terrell Mill Road, I wondered what was going on over there. Right next door is the Brazilian steakhouse Picanha, and less than two miles up Powers Ferry Road is Sal Grosso, yet another Brazilian steakhouse. But not to worry—Botekim is delightfully different from traditional Brazilian churrascarias. This is what it is not: a gorging experience where a green light at the table invites a never-ending selection of grilled meats on spits, sometimes served by guys in gauchos. Don’t get me wrong. I love Brazilian steakhouses, and sometimes nothing else will fill my craving but grilled meat and gauchos. However, you have to get psyched to go to …

East Cobb Take Five

Email Intrigue, Budget Slicing, Great Eats

A most savory East Cobb Take Five list for Friday, July 29.

1. Weatherwise, Friday figures to be another cuckoo-hot day, much like the rest of the week, with temperatures in the mid-90s and humidity to match, and a slight threat of rain and thunderstorms. The heat index: 99 to 104. Take it easy and be careful out there at the end of the work week, because Saturday's going to be even hotter, with a high near 97. The early part of next week calls for more mid-90s highs, and lows in the mid- to low-70s. 2. What's in the private emails sent between four Cobb school board members? Our preview of Thursday night's meeting summarized complaints from a parents that the board majority (including East Cobb's Scott Sweeney) who voted for a return to a traditional school calendar were communicating outside of …
