Are You Ready for Winter Weather?

Keep track of road conditions, school openings/closings and more as the temperature dips below freezing Thursday night.

Snow was falling over parts of north Georgia and some exurban areas of metro Atlanta late Thursday afternoon, and Cobb County remains part of a winter weather advisory into Friday morning. Here are a few links to check regarding road conditions, schools, weather forecasts and emergency preparedness in a worst-case scenario. As of late Thursday afternoon, the Cobb County School District said it was monitoring weather reports but has made no announcements about Friday classes. The school district has compiled an inclement weather fact sheet explaining its standard procedures and policies and information resources. Winter Storm Watch for Cobb

Snow and other hazardous traveling weather are expected from Thursday afternoon through Friday morning.

From the Marietta Police Department: The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Cobb, Dekalb, Douglas, Fulton and Gwinnett County. Forecast anticipates that we will see rainfall around 2pm on Thursday and will start to see a change over from rain to snow around 5pm which will continue overnight. This is subject to change if the system speeds up or slows down. Cobb County can expect approximately 1/2 to 1 inch of snow accumulations possible on grassy areas. The temperature will drop below freezing between 10pm and midnight Thursday night and will warm up to freezing by mid-morning. Cobb County is expecting 1-3 inches of snow by Friday morning as well as a combination of rain and snow.

Snow, Accumulations Possible Thursday

Rain across north Georgia may turn to snow with the arrival of a deep cold air mass.

The Cobb area could get the first snow of the winter and 2013 on Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service. A strong low pressure system and ample Gulf moisture will meet, resulting in widespread rain and an associated deep cold air mass that will begin to spread across north and central Georgia on Thursday afternoon and evening, meteorologists say in a special weather statement issued today. As a result, rain could change over to snow across parts of north Georgia, including Cobb. Despite recent unseasonably warm temps, residents could see some light accumulations of snow across parts of north Georgia by mid to late Thursday afternoon or evening, mainly on elevated and grassy surfaces. Winter Weather Comes to Cobb

Light snowfall arrived in East Cobb on Wednesday, and the forecast extends to north and central Georgia tonight.

Some light snowfall came to East Cobb Wednesday afternoon, the day after a mild but wet Christmas Day. The National Weather Service has issued a special weather advisory for north and central Georgia through this evening. No accumulation is expected, except for areas in the north Georgia mountains, and no more than a quarter of an inch. Metro Atlanta missed the threat of tornadoes that swept across the Gulf Coast area on Christmas Day, stretching from Houston to Mobile. As heavy rains on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and into Wednesday faded into light showers, temperatures dropped into the high 30s in East Cobb by mid-Wednesday afternoon.
