After conquering the state in Class AAAAA duals wrestling competition, Pope High School will attempt to keep its claim as the Cobb County champion this weekend. The Greyhounds have won the last five Cobb County Invitational meets, and are favored again in an all-class competition featuring 18 of the county's 21 high schools. Wrestlers from Walton, Wheeler, Kell, Sprayberry and Lassiter also are entered. The first matches get underway Friday at Sprayberry; The Marietta Daily Journal has a full preview. The championship matches take place on Sunday afternoon. Major League Baseball outfielder Jeremy Hermida is one of five inductees in Wheeler High School's Athletic Hall of Fame to be honored in January. Hermida, who played for the San Diego Padres in the 2012 season, will be recognized during the Jan. 19 Wheeler basketball game against Cherokee. The other inductees are: A dinner and ceremony will be held in the Wheeler cafeteria starting at 4:30 p.m. The inductees also will be recognized at halftime of the varsity boys' basketball game. The cost for the dinner is $15 per person and reservations must be made by Jan. 9.
