Public schools will be one of the few government services in operation today. Tell us what you think about that.
Banks are closed today. So are post offices. But schools will still be in session. Veterans Day was Sunday, and because the holiday fell on the weekend, many entities will observe the holiday today, including the federal government, which will be giving many of its employees the day off, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Today is also a holiday for the state of Georgia, one of the 12 holidays state employees will observe this year. While most other government-related offices will be closed for the day, students this morning will be heading to classes in the Cobb, Douglas, and Paulding county school systems. The City of Smyrna is holding a Veterans Day ceremony at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, at Brinkley Park, in addition to the Veterans Day service held by The American Legion Post 160 at 11 a.m. outside of the Legion office on 160 Legion Drive. This week's Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Weekend Spotlight features an area Veterans Day event in Smyrna where residents can show their support for local veterans. The 5th Annual Smyrna Veterans Day Service will be held this Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. at Brinkley Park next to The American Legion Post 160 office at 160 Legion Drive SE in Smyrna. The event is open to the public, and residents are encouraged to arrive by 1:45 p.m. Residents can help support local veterans and their families by making donations…

Boy and Girl Scouts from around the metro Atlanta area gathered at the Marietta National Cemetery Saturday to honor veterans.
Venturers, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Brownies from around Atlanta gathered at the Marietta Confederate Cemetery on Saturday to place 18, 832 flags on the graves of veterans.

To take advantage of the offers please note the following: Applebee’s – free meal, Friday. Last year, Applebee’s served 1,024,000 million free meals to military veterans and active servicemembers. Applebee’s is again offering a free meal to military veterans and active-duty service members on Veteran’s Day. There are seven entrées to choose from. Military ID or proof of service required. Chili’s – free meal, Friday. Chili’s is offering all military veterans past and present their choice of one of six meals. Fifth-grade students at Shallowford Falls Elementary School in East Cobb will present that school’s Thirteenth Annual Veteran’s Day Concert on Friday. Two performances are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Patriotic music, dance numbers, and a moving tribute to American armed forces members past and present are planned. A reception will follow each performance. Approximately 125 students along with several professional guest musicians will join together to honor veterans in the community. The public is invited, especially veterans. For more information, contact Donna Swan, music teacher. Shallowford Falls Elementary is located at 3529 Lassiter Road. Hightower Trail Middle School is calling its Veterans Day program "Who Paid the Price?" …
