The Georgia Bulldogs have been preparing in Orlando since last Wednesday for their New Year's Day Capital One Bowl matchup against the Big Ten's Nebraska. Coming off a heartbreaking SEC championship loss in which a few yards made the difference between playing for the national title and being passed over for a BCS berth, the Dawgs are looking to close out the 2012 season on a triumphant note. Some analysts think that's likely. "With the way that the Bulldogs left Atlanta, they are looking for redemption and there is not much that the Cornhuskers can do to stop it from being achieved," Ian Berg writes for Bleacher Report. For the Bulldogs, the hype about a possible national championship has begun.
Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity might have been prescient when he asserted earlier this season that Georgia Tech, and not Florida, is really the Bulldogs' biggest rival. Who would have predicted a month ago that so much would ride on this weekend's in-state matchup? Georgia survived the easier of its back-to-back triple-option challenges by defeating Georgia Southern last week. Now the Bulldogs, suddenly catapulted to No. 3 in the BCS standings, must withstand a visit from Georgia Tech before turning their attention to the SEC Championship game, likely against No. 2 Alabama. A victory Saturday should send the Bulldogs to the SEC championship game.
Auburn is not good this year. They're still looking for an SEC win, and Georgia might not be the best place to find it. The Bulldogs, while romping through some rough patches, are ranked fifth in the country and need only beat the Tigers to wrap up the SEC East Division and play for the league championship. Of course, Bulldogs coach Mark Richt isn't preparing his team for a cakewalk. "I told the guys `Get your mind right, right now,"' Richt said in an Associated Press story earlier this week. "We know they're capable of knocking us off." The Dawgs will be bringing a depleted receiving corps to Auburn. The Bulldogs could coast to an SEC East title - if they can get past the undefeated Gators.
In their last two games, Georgia got trounced by South Carolina and barely squeaked by the unimpressive Kentucky Wildcats. And yet, Bulldogs fans are still talking about a shot at the SEC championship. Why? Because the Bulldogs have only one loss, and if they beat Florida on Saturday, a relatively gentle schedule gives them an opportunity to cruise to the SEC East title. The schedule is so favorable, an AP reporter suggested that Georgia "might be the most fortunate team in the nation." It might be better to be lucky than good, but are the Bulldogs good enough to beat a Florida team that wiped the floor with South Carolina, the team that wiped the floor with Georgia? There may not be anything more important this weekend in Georgia and South Carolina than what’s fixin’ to take place Saturday in Columbia. When the Gamecocks and Bulldogs square off in Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday at 7 p.m. (ESPN) in the biggest SEC football matchup of the season. It may be the biggest game in series history. "Perhaps no SEC program has blindsided Mark Richt's Georgia teams more viciously than Tennessee," David Ching writes for ESPN.com's DawgNation blog. Which is why the No. 5 Bulldogs won't be overlooking the visiting Volunteers this weekend, though the 3-1 Vols are a 14-point underdog. The game starts at 3:30 p.m. and will be shown on CBS. As if there weren't enough to get pumped about in an SEC game, both squads still remember last year's postgame dustup between coaches.
There was some question at the beginning of the University of Georgia's football season as to whether Russ, a not-direct-line descendant who nevertheless ascended to the role of Uga IX, could give UGA the juice it needed to succeed. So far, Russ has fulfilled his responsibilities, as Georgia heads into its game against Vanderbilt with an unblemished 3-0 record. The Red and Black checks in with the pampered mascot as he continues his push through a high-pressure season. Few of the 92,000 or so fans headed to Sanford Stadium on Saturday will be expecting a nailbiter as the University of Georgia Bulldogs host Florida Atlantic, a 43-point underdog. What the visiting team will be expecting for its trouble, though, is a big paycheck: UGA has agreed to fork over $1 million for the privilege of hosting Florida Atlantic without a reciprocal visit. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that's the most Georgia has ever paid a visiting team. A key purpose of the game, which begins a long homestand for the Bulldogs, is to give the team a seventh home game for the season. UGA is expected to pull in $1.7 million for itself from the game. The Bulldogs have a new mascot and high expectations going into the 2012 season.
First things first: There's a new Uga in town, and he's got a familiar face. The new Bulldog mascot, Uga IX, is none other than Russ, a frequent interim Uga during the line's tumultuous few years. The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Russ first saw Uga duty in 2009, when his half-brother, Uga VII, died. The selection is not without controversy, as some students the Banner-Herald interviewed are unhappy he's not a direct descendant of the original. Meanwhile, the human Bulldogs are preparing for their 2012 opener against Buffalo with some serious study. The injury-plagued career of former Walton High School standout Brandon Burrows will continue -- but at another college football program. Burrows has requested and received an unconditional release from the University of Georgia after missing last season. A star at defensive end during his high school career for the Raiders, Burrows also wants to return to that position after being converted to linebacker at UGA. The Bulldogs have changed their defensive emphasis since Burrows signed out of Walton in 2010. He redshirted his freshman season, then sat out the 2011 season with a shoulder injury. He was listed as a third-team inside linebacker on UGA's depth chart at the end of spring practice. Burrows has not indicated where he may …
