Cobb Commissioners are thinking about ways to keep tax dollars out of the hands of illegal immigrants.
After a 3-2 vote last month against the IMAGE Certification Program, the Cobb Board of Commissioners is considering ways to stop county funds from going to illegal immigrants. Discussion led by District 1 Commissioner Helen Goreham on forming a committee to study illegal immigrants is expected to be on the agenda for the next board meeting. County Chairman Tim Lee told The Marietta Daily Journal that Goreham's proposal is "in response to the proposed IMAGE code amendment" to make sure the county is doing the right thing and being "effective and efficient" when it comes to this matter. Cobb Commission Chairman Tim Lee will deliver the 2013 state of the county address before the Cobb Chamber of Commerce next week. The organization's First Monday breakfast starts Jan. 14 at 7:30 a.m. at the Cobb Galleria Centre, 2 Galleria Parkway. The online registration and refund deadline is this Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 12 p.m. Tickets are $25 a person for Cobb Chamber members online and $40 at the door; general admission tickets are $60 a person. East Cobb Commissioner Bob Ott will be sworn in for a second term on Wednesday. Ott, a Republican who was re-elected without opposition this year, will take the oath of office Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the office of Cobb Superior Court Judge Adele Grubbs, 70 Haynes St., Marietta. His District 2 covers most of East Cobb below Roswell Road and the Smyrna-Vinings area. Cobb County Government is investigating ways to alleviate the projected eight percent increase in water rates that will be passed on to consumers from the Cobb County Water System. Chairman Tim Lee suggested the county look at refinancing the Cobb-Marietta Water Authority's debt. With the current low interest rate, this plan could bring significant savings to the county and its water consumers. As reported in The Marietta Daily Journal, there was a transfer of $20 million from the Water System to the general fund to help balance the budget combined with a rate increase. This shuffling of funds has been decried by several people, including District 3 Commissioner JoAnn Birrell, as a back door tax hike.

Cobb Commission Chairman Tim Lee will be one of four prominent Republicans to speak at the East Cobb Republican meeting on Wednesday. Lee, who was re-elected last month to serve a full four-year term as chairman, will be speaking alongside Cobb Sheriff Neil Warren, Cobb GOP Chairman Joe Dendy and House District 41 candidate Phil Daniell. The East Cobb Republicans consist of House Districts 43, 44, 45 and 46. The meeting is open to everyone regardless of party affiliation or beliefs. The meeting will be held at Tijuana Joe's on Johnson Ferry Road. The meeting will last from 7 to 8 p.m. with free admission. It is recommended that people coming to the event arrive around 6:30 p.m.

The combative three-week period between Tim Lee and Bill Byrne in the Cobb Commission Chairman's runoff campaign is nearing an end. Voters go to the polls again on Tuesday to decide on whether to keep Lee, the incumbent, or return Byrne to his old position after a 10-year absence. Since there is no Democratic opponent in November, the winner of this battle between Republicans will be elected chairman for the four-year period starting in Jan. 2013. Cobb voters also will decide countywide offices for a State Court judgeship and for Superior Court Clerk, as well as other local races, including the District 4 Cobb Commission seat, where incumbent Woody Thompson has Democratic opposition. Does week's decision affecting the Walton and Lassiter choruses have its roots in what Tim Lee said about TSPLOST?
Did Tim Lee cause the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus to snub the Walton High School and Lassiter High School choral programs? Why would I ask such a preposterous question? After years of routine inclusion, the ASO Chorus has excluded these two outstanding choral programs. Granted, the ASO has come back and "clarified" its action. Apparently it didn't REALLY mean Walton and Lassiter were not "diverse" enough, it just wants to "include" a school from the inner city. Still, the original statement is usually the closest to the truth and everything else is spin or CYA. Cobb Commission Chairman Tim Lee won't debate his Aug. 21 Republican runoff opponent in his bid to keep his job.
