School SPLOST Vote Set for March 2013

The Cobb Board of Education approved a resolution Wednesday, but heard a strong dose of anti-tax sentiment.

As expected, the Cobb Board of Education on Wednesday adopted a resolution to call for a March 2013 referendum to extend the Education SPLOST. But the job of selling voters on a $717 million school construction and maintenance project list figures to be a challenging one, given Cobb's recent SPLOST track record.  The one-cent sales tax, if approved by voters, would begin in January 2014 and would be collected through December 2018. But before the vote, representatives of a local taxpayers group and the Georgia Tea Party spoke out against a March referendum. And the chairwoman of the school board's SPLOST citizen oversight panel predicted that the finalized SPLOST IV "notebook" (see attached PDF) will fail at the polls. The board voted only…

Carson, Lamutt Reach Runoff Election

A political newcomer and a former legislator will square off against each other Oct. 18.

Former state Sen. Robert Lamutt's campaign supporters had high hopes as they gathered at the Paradise South of the Border Mexican restaurant on Sandy Plains Road to wait for election results Tuesday night. But it was first-time candidate John Carson, an accountant with SunTrust Bank, who edged out Lamutt in the special election for state House District 43 in Northeast and East Cobb. Because no one in the five-candidate election won a majority, Carson and Lamutt advance to a heads-up runoff Oct. 18. Here are Tuesday's final, unofficial results, according to the Georgia Secretary of State's Office, including 92 early-in-person and 146 absentee-by-mail ballots:  Total votes cast: 2,248 According to Beth Kish, registration manager at the Cobb …

43rd District Voters Trickle In

Northeast Cobb Patch and East Cobb Patch will have coverage of the election results and candidate reaction.

Voters didn't let rain deter them from casting a ballot today in the special election to fill the state House District 43 vacancy created by the July death of Rep. Bobby Franklin.  Fourteen precincts in Northeast Cobb and East Cobb opened at 7 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m. as voters choose among five candidates, all Republicans, as was Franklin. Nancy Gresham, a polling officer at the Lassiter High school precinct, said 13 voters cast ballots before 11 a.m. At the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church precinct, 61 voters cast ballots before 11 a.m., poll officer Steve Goff said. According to Beth Kish, registration manager at the Cobb County Board of Elections and Registration, 92 people voted early in person, and 146 cast ballots by mail…

Candidate Q&A: Roy C. Barnes

This is the first in a series of profiles of the hopefuls for the Sept. 20 special election to fill the state House District 43 seat.

Roy C. Barnes tells a story from 1932, when he was just a toddler traveling with his parents in the Northeast. The family was stopped and held for a time by police, who mistakenly thought Barnes was the kidnapped son of famous aviator Charles Lindbergh and his wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh. The Lindbergh child had been abducted days earlier in New Jersey. Barnes is 81 years old now and is one of five candidates running in a special election for the Georgia House District 43 seat, held for 15 years by Rep. Bobby Franklin, who died in July. The election for the Northeast Cobb County seat is Tuesday, Sept. 20.  If a runoff is needed, it will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18. The winner will represent the 43rd District in the 2012 legislative session. …
