Community Spotlight: Relay for Life Kickoff Party

The first ever Relay for Life in the Smyrna-Vinings area is kicking off this weekend. Find out how you can participate and help fight cancer.

This week's Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Weekend & Community Spotlight features the Relay for Life Vinings-Smyrna Kickoff Party. The kickoff event will be held this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Hyatt Place Atlanta/Cobb Galleria. The actual Relay for Life event will be held in May at The Lovett School. Weekend Spotlight: Relay for Life Kickoff

Enjoy fun festivities with family and friends while supporting a good cause and people who are fighting cancer.

This week's Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Weekend & Community Spotlight features the Paulding County Relay for Life Kickoff. The festivities will start 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Paulding County Senior Center, 54 Industrial Way North, Dallas. Tritt Raises $10K in Relay For Life

Students, teachers, staff and parents at the East Cobb elementary school actively participated in the cancer fundraiser.

Relay for Life is an annual fund-raiser from the American Cancer Society. Each year teams are formed and challenged to raise as much money as they can before the actual event (which is always held the Friday before Mother's Day at Jim Miller Park). Teams spend an evening together to celebrate cancer survivors and to remember those that have passed from this tragic disease. Members from each team walk the track as part of the event. Special activities, music and food are also a part of the evening's festivities.   The Tritt Elementary School team worked to collect donations throughout the school year, first reaching out to the faculty and staff.  The United For A Cure t-shirt sale became the school's Thursday uniform and was a huge success…

East Cobb Student Named Leader

Will Mathison of Hightower Trail Middle School has been honored for his work assisting the Relay for Life team at Shallowford Falls Elementary.

Hightower Trail Middle School student Will Mathison has been included in the 21st Century Leaders Class of 2011 student leaders. Mathison, a sixth-grader at the East Cobb School and the son of Brett and Liz Mathison, was honored for his community service in donating more than $3,000 to Shallowford Falls Elementary School’s Relay for Life team, which benefits the American Cancer Society. The 20 students selected from the state of Georgia by the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s 40 Under 40 alumni are outstanding youth committed to making an impact in their communities and serve as a positive example to others.
