Krystal Lo will be attending the University of Georgia in the fall.
Krystal Winnie Lo, a senior at Pope High School, has chosen to enroll at the University of Georgia as a Stamps Leadership Scholar. The value of the Stamps Foundation Fellowship for four years at Georgia is approximately $130,000, including enrichment funds for international travel, research internships, and outdoor leadership experiences. Lo was chosen for her leadership, scholarship, perseverance, service and innovation. The Stamps Family Charitable Foundation supports merit scholarships at 35 partner universities and colleges across the country. An informational meeting will take place at the school on May 14.
The Pope Robotics Team will be forming for the 2013-2014 academic year in preparation for FIRST Robotics Competition, and interested students are invited to attend an informational meeting next month. FIRST -- For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology -- involves students interested in applying their knowledge of mathematics, science and technology concepts to design, build, test, and compete with robots and to learn more about possible careers in those fields. In addition, they'll develop valuable design, project management, programming, teamwork and strategic thinking skills. Earlier this week Patch told you about the good marks for Walton, Pope, Wheeler, Lassiter and other East Cobb-area high schools as among the "most challenging" in the country. To illustrate how subjective these criteria are, we give you the latest high school rankings from U.S. News. While Lassiter High School fares well again -- it's considered the 7th-best in Georgia and No. 343 in the nation -- other "most challenging" schools in the area didn't make the list at all. Here's the real head-scratcher: Walton and Pope were unranked even in Georgia. Wheeler was ranked No. 17 (and No. 906 nationally) and also was on the "most challenging" list. Five East Cobb-area high schools are among 11 Cobb County schools included in The Washington Post's list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools. Walton High School had the highest ranking of the Cobb County schools, coming in at No. 3 on the state list and No. 163 on the national list. Lassiter is listed at No. 20 in Georgia on the list, which surveyed around 1,900 high school nationwide. A Pope High School student was arrested at the school last Wednesday after authorities found marijuana and another drug inside his vehicle. Just after 11 a.m. on March 13, Cobb authorities discovered the items during a sweep of classrooms. A dog detected drugs on David Gonzalez's clothing and backpack, according to a criminal warrant. "We found nothing but his eyes were very red and he wasn't making a lot of sense in his speech," authorities wrote in the warrant. "We ask(ed) him if he had anything in his vehicle that he shouldn't have and he said 'no.' We walked out to the vehicle and we asked if we could search. He said 'yes.' Eight East Cobb-area high school basketball teams qualified for the state tournament. Only one has survived the first round. The Wheeler High School boys had little trouble with Dacula Wednesday, winning 71-56 at home to set up a second-round Class AAAAAA game Saturday against Meadowcreek. Tipoff time has not been announced. The Walton High School boys took to the road at Shiloh, and had a 43-33 lead after three quarters. But the Raiders were clipped in the final seconds, losing 54-52 in another Class AAAAAA game. In the Class AAAAA tournament, both local boys teamed were eliminated in the first round.
