Walton, Lassiter Turn Back Upset Bids

The Raiders overcame a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Wheeler; the Trojans roared back to remain undefeated.

Friday was a wild night in Region 5-AAAAAA high school football action, and that's putting it mildly. Wheeler had Walton on the ropes in what would have been the upset of the year, at least in games played in East Cobb. At the same time in Alpharetta, Milton was rolling out to a big, and surprising, lead against undefeated and second-ranked Lassiter. But as the games wore on, the favorites figured out how to get back in their games, and ultimately win them, in very different ways. Walton got a touchdown run from Tyren Jones and a touchdown pass from Price Wilson to D.J. Smith to erase a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit and nip Wheeler on the road, 24-23. Lassiter quarterback Eddie Printz threw for four touchdowns in the second half and 409 …

Thursday Night Football in East Cobb

For the second year in a row, Pope and Sprayberry will be meeting a day before the traditional high school schedule.

Perhaps last year's game was just the appetizer. For the second year in a row, the Pope vs. Sprayberry game will be played on a Thursday night -- tonight, in fact, at Pope's home field, 3001 Hembree Road. And it's a big Region 7-AAAAA subdivision B game for the Greyhounds and Yellow Jackets, who will kick off a little earlier than usual as well -- at 7 p.m. In last year's game, Sprayberry led Pope 21-6 going into the fourth quarter before the Greyhounds recovered for a 27-21 Homecoming win. And just as last year, is being played a day early for television purposes. It is part of the Georgia High School Association's agreement with WSB-TV, which will air the contest online and on Comcast Channel 248 and Charter Channel 126. Television …

Walton, Lassiter Scratch Out Wins

The Raiders and Trojans remain unbeaten in region play going into their meeting next week in the "Super Bowl of East Cobb."

After three quarters Friday, Lassiter had just 16 points on the scoreboard.  Woodstock's defense had something to do with that, along with some injuries for the Trojans.  But Lassiter, ranked No. 2 in Class AAAAAA, pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 30-7 in a Region 5AAAAAA game.  Eddie Printz threw for 170 yards and a touchdown, Willie Police scored a touchdown and so did linebacker Patrick Levandoski, on an interception return in the fourth quarter.  The Trojans (5-0, 2-0) can now turn their full attention toward Friday's clash with Walton on Friday. The 6th-ranked Raiders (4-1, 2-0) won their Homecoming game 21-7 over Cherokee, as Tyren Jones ran for 180 yards and scored two touchdowns in another Region 5AAAAAA game.  After the …

Key Homecoming Clashes in East Cobb

Region play continues tonight for Walton and Wheeler; Pope also plays at home.

After the parades are over and the Homecoming courts are introduced, the Walton and Wheeler football teams will settle in for the serious business of the evening Friday.  The Raiders and Wildcats play their Homecoming games tonight, and their region contests against Cherokee and Milton, respectively, could prove critical as they try to stay in the hunt in Region 5-AAAAAA. Walton (3-1, 1-0) seeks to continue momentum after defeating Woodstock 24-7 last week. Cherokee (1-3, 0-1), is coming off a 41-6 loss to Lassiter, and has been one of the weaker teams in the region for several years, without a winning season since 2007.  But with the Raiders still addressing early-season defensive issues and quarterback Parker McLeod recovering from an …

Walton Rebounds; Wheeler Falls Late

Pope, Sprayberry and Lassiter also won Friday night in high school football games.

The Walton football team finally got a home game on Friday, and needed all of that familiar atmosphere -- plus a strong showing from backup quarterback Price Wilson -- to defeat Woodstock 24-7.  The Raiders bounced back from a 49-14 loss to North Cobb despite injuries. Wilson, playing for injured starter Parker McLeod (ankle sprain) was 14-19 passing for 142 yards and a touchdown.  Star running back Tyren Jones also was banged up, with a cast on his left hand to protect a sore wrist. But he still rushed for 129 yards and a touchdown for Walton (3-1, 1-0 in Region 5-AAAAAA).  More from The Marietta Daily Journal.  The Wheeler Wildcats' chances of staying unbeaten evaporated in the final minute of their road game against Etowah Friday, as …

Walton Stunned; Pope, Wheeler Win

The Raiders were upset by North Cobb, but otherwise it was a good night for East Cobb high school football teams.

Tyren Jones, meet Xavier Borishade.  For the first time in a long time, Jones, Walton's all-state running back, had to share the offensive spotlight with an opponent.  Borishade scored four touchdowns on Friday as North Cobb ran all over the Raiders in a 49-17 victory. For the Raiders (2-1), ranked No. 3 in Class AAAAAA, Friday's game was another distressing one for the defense, which is giving up an average of 36.6 points a game.  Borishade had two of his touchdowns in the first six minutes of the game, as North Cobb (2-0), as he caught eight passes for 173 yards.  Walton trailed 21-17 but did not score in the second half. Jones ran for 172 yards and a touchdown, but the Raiders needed more than that to catch up with the Warriors.  "We …

Walton Swings Back into Action

The Raiders football team visits North Cobb after a week off; Wheeler also is on the road and it's Homecoming at Pope.

The Walton High School football team got some rest last week. But the Raiders still don't get to play a home game, at least not for another week.  However, they will be playing at a relatively early time tonight when they face North Cobb at 7:30. Walton (2-0), ranked No. 3 in Class AAAAAA, has started the season with two late televised games against Brookwood and McEachern, with the latter ending well after midnight.  North Cobb is 1-0 after defeating Starr's Mill 42-3 last week.  Wheeler also is 2-0 after easily defeating Pope last week. The Wildcats play their first road game of the season at 7:30 tonight at Langston Hughes of Fayetteville, also 2-0. Tonight is homecoming for Pope High School. The Greyhounds (0-2) will be looking for …

Wheeler, Pope Renew Football Rivalry

Another East Cobb backyard battle takes place Friday; Walton is off this week.

It's still early in the high school football season, but here's an unexpected scenario as two East Cobb schools face one another tonight: Wheeler is coming off a rousing season opener, while Pope is looking for its first win after a walloping loss.  The Wheeler Wildcats plays host to Pope at 7:30 tonight in a non-region contest looking to go 2-0 on the season. Wheeler, which was off last week, came back in the fourth quarter to defeat Sprayberry to start the season. The Pope Greyhounds were never really in the game last week as they suffered a 27-7 loss to Marietta.  Pope has won the last four meetings against Wheeler, including a 31-7 win in last year's season opener for both teams.  After two high-scoring wins to start their season, the …

Walton Wins a Thrilling Late, Late Show

The Raiders topped McEachern in the final seconds, Lassiter hung on against Hillgrove and Pope fell hard to Marietta Friday.

Tyren Jones enjoyed another game for the Walton Raiders Friday. But it was the foot of Anthony Price that was golden for the Raiders in the final seconds of Friday's matchup with McEachern.  His 43-yard field goal with 25 seconds lifted Walton, ranked No. 3 in Class AAAAAA, to a 37-35 win in the finale of an East Cobb-West Cobb doubleheader at McEachern. Due to the high-scoring, rollicking nature of both games, the Walton celebrations didn't commence until after 1 a.m. Saturday.  Jones rushed for 332 yards and scored four touchdowns for Walton (2-0), which came from behind several times during the game.  The Indians (0-2) went ahead for the final time at 35-34 on a touchdown run and a two-point conversion with 2:15 to play.  The linescore …
