Wheeler's freshmen made the difference against Marietta in Tuesday's 69-62 victory at the Doug Lipscomb Gym. As The Marietta Daily Journal reported, rookies Daniel Giddens and Kejuan Johnson made big plays down the stretch as the Wildcats moved to a Region 5-AAAAA-leading 6-0 mark, a game ahead of the Blue Devils. Wheeler's rugged nonconference schedule appears to be paying off. The Wildcats are 7-5 overall, but 6-0 in region games with Woodstock (7-10, 2-4) looming next on the schedule on Friday. The Wheeler girls fell to 6-8 and 2-3 with a 63-46 loss to Marietta. The Walton boys are 8-9 and 2-4 after a 75-64 loss to Etowah Tuesday. The game was the fourth in five nights for the Raiders, who meet Centennial on Friday. The Walton …

The Pope Greyhounds look like an even stronger bet to defend their state wrestling championship than when the season started. The Greyhounds easily claimed the Region 5AAAA meet for the fifth consecutive season at the Hound Pound on Friday and Saturday, and will be the favorite when the Class AAAA duals are held this weekend in Macon. The Walton boys basketball team fell to 7-5 on the season with a 91-89 double overtime loss to Marietta on Friday. The Lady Raiders are only 2-10 on the season with a 72-29 loss to Marietta. Both teams return to action Tuesday against Lassiter at Walton, with the girls starting at 6 p.m. and the boys tipping off at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, the Wheeler boys downed Cherokee 70-57 to bring their record to 5-5. …

1. Maybe I'm just getting nostalgiac, but Alice Cooper's act doesn't seem so outrageous now as it did when I was a kid in the '70s. I realized it was fake blood before my elders did, but bringing the boa constrictor on stage didn't improve their perceptions of his act. One of the originators of rock concert-as-spectacle is bringing his "No More Mr. Nice Guy" tour to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre at 8 p.m. tonight. And "energy" is the key word here. I don't know where this 60-something still has it, and I'm not sure what he's going to use as stage props. But if you're interested in going, here's how to get tickets. They generally range from $45 to $65. 2. For those of you preferring a quieter activity today, the Hightower Trail …

Back in the playoffs after nine years, Pope's inexperience shows in loss to Clarke County.
ATHENS—Ending a nine-year absence from the state playoffs, the Pope Lady Greyhounds advanced to the second round of the AAAA Georgia High School Association tournament Tuesday night at Clarke Central, but a lack of experience and a surplus of turnovers took their toll as the East Cobb girls suffered a season-ending 57-30 loss. The inevitable rookie nerves showed from the start for the Greyhounds, who quickly fell behind the Gladiators and forced Coach Courtney Harris to call a timeout 52 seconds into the game when they had trouble beating Clarke Central's 1-2-1-1 three-quarter-court press. But the Lady Greyhounds settled down. They trailed by only three points, 12-9, at the end of the first quarter and took the lead midway through the …

East Cobb treams bounced out of first round of state high school basketball tourney.
The first round of the Georgia High School Association basketball tournament turned out to be the end of the road for three of East Cobb's five teams that qualified for the playoffs. Both Walton teams were eliminated on Saturday, with the girls being trounced 61-39 by defending Class AAAAA state champion Norcross. The boys, who have been ranked as high as No. 6 this season, dropped a 65-61 decision to Mill Creek at home. The Raiders, who beat Wheeler during the season and earned the first seed in the Region 5AAAAA tournament, closed out the season with a 19-7 record. And in a heartbreaker, the Pope boys (21-8) fell 57-56 at Chattahoochee in the Class AAAA bracket, with the margin of victory coming on a free throw with three seconds …

The Lady Greyhounds were behind until the final seven seconds of the game, but found a way to advance in the state tournament.
The Pope Lady Greyhounds led Friday’s first-round tournament game for only about a minute and a half. Fortunately those 90 seconds were the most important to Pope as it escaped with a victory over Forsyth Central, 42-39. Forsyth Central’s Anna Blackburn and Keely Chester opened the game with each girl connecting on a 3-pointer. Before the Lady Greyhounds knew it, they were down by seven points without the team even getting on the scoreboard. Taylor Schwan scored four of her 11 points to get Pope started in the first quarter while Angela Davis also added four of her game-high 14 points as the Lady Greyhounds battled back early on. “This is the first time we've been to a state game in probably seven or eight years,” said head coach Courtney …

Looking ahead to the first round of the Georgia high school basketball tournament.

Three of the five East Cobb high school teams competing in the Georgia High School Association tournament that begins this weekend will be playing at home, and all three gained homecourt advantage by reaching their respective regional tournament finals. The No. 2 Wheeler boys (22-6), fresh off a 69-66 win over Walton in the Region 5-AAAAA championship game, will play host to North Gwinnett Saturday in a game that starts at 6 p.m. Walton (19-6), ranked 8th in Class AAAAA, also is at home Saturday against Mill Creek in a game beginning at 7 p.m. (Class AAAAA boys bracket) Ticket prices for both games are $7. Pope advances to Region 5-AAAA semifinals.
For one half of play Tuesday, it looked like the Cinderella run of No. 11 seed East Paulding might continue to the state tournament. After knocking off North Paulding and Villa Rica in the region tournament's first two rounds, all the Lady Raiders had to do to punch their state tournament ticket was knock off 20-5 and Region 5-AAAA No. 3 seed Pope. The No.11 seeded Lady Raiders hung around until halftime – they only trailed by seven – but Pope started the second half with a 12-0 run, a run that turned a once close game into an eventual 63-41 Lady Greyhound blowout. Both coaches felt the first few minutes of the third quarter ended up being the difference in the game, "There was a moment early in the second half where we lost our way," East…
