Students from Pope, Walton and Wheeler high schools have reached the semifinal stage of the National Merit Scholarship program. They are among 55 students from the Cobb County School District and nearly 16,000 nationwide still eligible for finalist status, which includes a $2,500 scholarship. Several recent graduates of Pope, Walton and Wheeler high schools have been named College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarship award winners. They are among the more than 2,000 students nationwide receiving between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. The East Cobb recipients, their high schools, college choices and probable career fields include:

Five high school seniors from East Cobb have been named recipients of $2,500 scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Four of the students are from Walton High School: Jacob Albert (undecided career field); Denny Jin (mathematics); Hyun T. Kim (law) and Lisa Wang (biological research). Also selected where Wheeler High School's Daniel Wolfson (medicine) and Blake Marie Hauser of The Westminster School and who is interested in studying medicine. Four East Cobb students have been named corporate-sponsored National Merit scholarship winners by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Catherine F. Brock and William C. Gutman of Wheeler High School and Ryan A. Humble and Esther H. Kim of Walton High School are among the nearly 1,000 high school seniors nationwide who have won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards financed by about 200 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations. Scholars were selected from students who advanced to the finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors.
