The Mountain View Aquatic Center officially reopened to the public Monday and there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony next Monday, Oct. 22, to mark recent improvements at the facility. The grand reopening ceremony will be held starting at 3:30 p.m. at the facility on 2650 Gordy Parkway. As part of the voter-approved 2011 Cobb Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, the aquatic center underwent a state-of-the-art renovation that provides improved air quality for Cobb residents. The renovation transformed the center into a more efficient and environmentally-sustainable facility. The Mountain View Aquatic Center in Northeast Cobb has been closed all summer because of a complete renovation that is expected to be complete by October. The renovation is one part of the $82 million in projects designed to renovate, maintain and update Cobb County's parks and recreation facilities. The projects are paid for by SPLOST funds. According to information provided by the office of Cobb District 3 Commissioner JoAnn Birrell, several milestones in the renovation were hit in recent weeks. The painting of the natatorium ceiling and steel structures was completed by July 23. It's hot -- very, very hot -- and school is out for the summer. Swimming pools abound in private neighborhoods all around East Cobb. But for those without a place to cool off, relief is on the way. East Cobb's only outdoor pool will open Tuesday. The Sewell Park pool, located at 2055 Lower Roswell Road, opens today under summer hours with vacationing youngsters in mind. The hours are 1-5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Starting on July 8, the pools will be open 1-5 p.m. on Sundays. The indoor Mountain View Aquatic Center, 2650 Gordy Parkway, is open year-round and begins summer swimming lessons on June 4.
