East Cobb Teacher Becomes Author

Hightower Trail Middle School's Re Marzullo has published "SPED," a young fiction title.

When she's not instructing her students and completing other duties as an eighth grade English teacher at Hightower Trail Middle School, Re Marzullo writes fiction. And this isn't casual dabbling-on-the-weekends fiction, but publishable fiction. Marzullo became a first-time author in February with the publication of "SPED," a fiction title geared toward the age group of the young readers she teaches. The book, published by Sauvignon Press, is available in print and online via Amazon.com. SPED is the story of Jack Parker, an eighth grader overcoming the challenges of middle school and interacting with his small group special education class. “From day one I saw my main character, Jack Parker, fully created in my head. I knew from the start …

New Hightower Trail Principal Named

Assistant principal Laura Montgomery has been appointed to succeed the retiring Dr. Hilda Wilkins.

Laura Montgomery was appointed the new principal of Hightower Trail Middle School this week by the Cobb Board of Education.  Montgomery, who had been the assistant principal of the East Cobb school, will be succeeding Dr. Hilda Wilkins, who announced her retirement this spring.  Montgomery's appointment is effective July 1, when the Cobb County School District's fiscal year 2013 begins.  Hightower Trail, located on Post Oak Tritt Road, has an enrollment of nearly 1,000 students in grades 6-8 and is a feeder for nearby Pope High School.  Pope also has a principal vacancy since Rick Beaulieu has been named an assistant area superintendent for the school system. The school board did not make a decision on the Pope opening during its public …

Walton Charter Renewal on Agenda

The Cobb Board of Education also will discuss a new principal for Hightower Trail Middle School on Wednesday.

The charter for Walton High School is up for renewal, and it's one of the main items the Cobb Board of Education will be discussing Wednesday at its June work session.  Cobb school superintendent Michael Hinojosa has recommended that the school board renew the charter, which began at Walton in 1998, for another five years.  The school board also will discuss a number of personnel decisions, including a new principal for Hightower Trail Middle School in East Cobb. Current principal Dr. Hilda Wilkins is retiring effective July 1.  So is David Addison, the school system's chief financial officer, who has proposed signficant spending and staff reductions to balance the district's budget, including a $72 million deficit for the fiscal year 2013…

Pope Principal Gets a Promotion

Rick Beaulieu has been appointed an area assistant superintendent; Hightower Trail Middle School principal Hilda Wilkins is retiring.

Two East Cobb schools will have new principals when the 2012-13 school year begins in August.  Principal Rick Beaulieu of Pope High School was appointed by the Cobb Board of Education Wednesday night as an area assistant superintendent. Cobb County School District spokesman Doug Goodwin said Beaulieu's specific geographic assignment has not been made.  During his time at Pope, Beaulieu oversaw renovations of the school building and Pope's move to Class AAAA in the Georgia High School Association, which made Greyhounds sports teams more competitive.  Said Cobb school board member David Banks of Beaulieu:  "Not only has he been a very effective and outstanding principal, but he’s made Pope High School one of the premier schools in this …

East Cobb Take Five

'No More Mr. Nice Guy' Hits Cobb

The Alice Cooper concert and other items of interest to start your Tuesday, Dec. 13.

1. Maybe I'm just getting nostalgiac, but Alice Cooper's act doesn't seem so outrageous now as it did when I was a kid in the '70s. I realized it was fake blood before my elders did, but bringing the boa constrictor on stage didn't improve their perceptions of his act. One of the originators of rock concert-as-spectacle is bringing his "No More Mr. Nice Guy" tour to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre at 8 p.m. tonight.  And "energy" is the key word here. I don't know where this 60-something still has it, and I'm not sure what he's going to use as stage props.  But if you're interested in going, here's how to get tickets. They generally range from $45 to $65.  2. For those of you preferring a quieter activity today, the Hightower Trail …

East Cobb Teacher Promotes 'Dream Art'

Judith Condon of Hightower Trail Middle School is involved in a civil rights-related contest for K-12 students.

What does Judith Condon have in common with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and civil rights legend Dr. Joseph Lowery?  The arts specialist at East Cobb's Hightower Trail Middle School is among those speaking in this video about The Dream Art Contest: Visions of the Civil Rights Movement and America Today, which is aimed at fostering an appreciation for the relevance of history and to demonstrate the importance of the arts. "Art is about showing who you are," Condon says on the video, which also is posted on the Cobb County School District website. "It's about not being afraid of being yourself." Metro Atlanta area students have until Nov. 18 to submit their contest entries, which can be portraits of famous civil rights figures or depictions of a…
