Retiring Lassiter Coach Wins Home Finale

Steve Day is stepping down after 31 seasons in charge of the Trojans' varsity wrestling team.

After 31 successful seasons, Lassiter High School wrestling Coach Steve Day led his final home meet earlier this week. The Trojan wrestling team sent Day out with a tight victory over Centennial, winning 37-36 in a dual meet. Day leaves quite a legacy, having seen more than 350 dual wins, five region titles, 13 individual state champions and over 75 state-placers. Day was profiled by The Marietta Daily Journal earlier in January when he announced his retirement due to health reasons. He will continue to teach at Lassiter. The Trojans will participate in the final stretch of the Georgia high school traditional wrestling schedule, starting with the Region 5-AAAAAA championships next weekend at Wheeler.

Pope Wrestling Repeats as State Champs

The Greyhounds cruised to their second consecutive GHSA title in duals competition.

The wrestling season isn't over yet for the Pope High School Greyhounds. There's still the Cobb County Championships coming up next week, as well as the state traditional wrestling meet. But Pope's dominance is beyond question after Saturday's 50-14 rout over Woodland of Bartow in the Class AAAAA duals finals in Macon. The Greyhounds, who are now 32-3 and remain the only Georgia school in the national prep rankings, took to the mats without their star, Brooks Climmons, who was away due to a death in the family. Pope overcame a slow start to win 11 matches, dropping only three. Coach Jim Haskin, in his 18th season, now has four state titles to his credit, including state traditional titles in 2011 and 2012. He tells Score Atlanta how the …

Coming off a strong performance at The Clash dual tournament in Rochester, Minn., over the holidays, the Pope High School wrestling team has returned home to play host to the Region 7-AAAAA duals on Saturday. Pope, the reigning state champion in duals, finished 10th at The Clash without star senior Brooks Climmons. The Greyhounds, who are 25-3 on the season, also moved up in the Intermat Fab 50 national high school rankings, from No. 50 to 34. They are the only Georgia school in those rankings. Kell is seeded No. 3 in the same regional and Sprayberry is No. 7. Also on Saturday, Lassiter enters the Region 5-AAAAAA duals as the co-top seed, along with host Roswell.
