East Cobb Take Five

Vote Today, Clean Up Saturday

Here's what you should know to start Sept. 16 in East Cobb.

1. The calendar says it’s still summer; Mother Nature says differently today in East Cobb, where it will be cold. The high will be only 65, and a breeze will gust up to 20 mph, the National Weather Service says. Overnight, the temperature will drop to about 55, and there’s a chance of drizzle after 2 a.m. 2. If you live in the state House's 43rd District, served by Rep. Bobby Franklin until his death in July, today is your last chance to beat the rush and vote early for Tuesday’s special election to fill the seat. You can vote from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the East Cobb Government Service Center, 4400 Lower Roswell Rd., and the Cobb Board of Elections and Registration, 736 Whitlock Ave. 3. East Cobb Patch is running the last of five profiles of…

East Cobb Take Five

Walton, Pope Top Cobb on SAT

Here's what you should know to start Sept. 15 in East Cobb.

1. The heat is off in East Cobb. The high today is expected to be 81 degrees, the National Weather Service says, and the cold front moving through could produce some rain showers and thunderstorms this morning. We’ll see an increasing breeze through the day with gusts up to 20 mph. The overnight low will be in the upper 50s. 2. All three East Cobb public high schools exceeded the county, state and national averages on the SAT college entrance exam for the Class of 2011, according to official numbers released Wednesday. The national average was 1500, down from 1509 in 2010, and the state average was 1445, down eight points. The Cobb County School District average held steady at 1522 out of a possible 2400. Pope, Walton and Wheeler were …

East Cobb Take Five

Rain Garden; Wheeler's Raleigh Holiday

Here's what you should know to start Sept. 7 in East Cobb.

1. No weather warnings or watches and not much warmth in the forecast for East Cobb today, according to the National Weather Service. Patchy fog and a slight chance of lingering rain will fade away by 8 a.m., leaving a mostly cloudy, breezy day with a high that might not reach 70 degrees. The overnight low will be around 57. 2. All the rain dumped by Tropical Storm Lee makes today’s Watershed Stewardship Program rain garden workday at the Cobb County Water Quality Lab, 662 S. Cobb Dr., particularly timely. The point of a rain garden is to limit storm runoff while adding an interesting, attractive landscape feature. The workday runs from 9 to 11 a.m. It should be more fun than the Cobb County Citizens Oversight Committee meeting at 9 at 100…

East Cobb Take Five

Walton Chorus Sings for Braves; Wheeler Swings to Strike Out Cancer

Here's what you need to know to start Aug. 30 in East Cobb.

1. The weather will be a little cooler, a little breezier and a little cloudier today than Monday, according to the National Weather Service. It will be mostly sunny with a high about 90 and a breeze in the afternoon that gusts to 15 mph. Overnight, the low will be around 70. The humidity remains low and the ground dry, so even though there’s not an official fire-threat warning, don’t flick cigarette butts into the brush. For example, there was a minor brush fire overnight near Cumberland Mall, WSB-TV reports. 2. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners has called a special meeting for Wednesday at 2 p.m. to hold a public hearing on the proposed fiscal 2012 budget, which goes into effect Oct. 1. Make your arrangements today to take time off …

Pope Falls to Kell in Softball

The Lady Greyhounds drop a 10-2 decision in Region 5-AAAA play.

The Lady Greyhounds traveled to Kell High School Thursday to take on the Lady Longhorns in fastpitch softball action.  Pope fell behind in the bottom of the first inning when Kell hit a grand slam and took a 5-0 lead. Pope attempted to rally in the fourth and fifth innings with RBIs from first baseman Laura Miller and catcher Laura Beall, but the Lady Longhorns’ offense proved to be too much in the 10-2 Pope loss. Perhaps most impressive was the base running of Pope’s third basemea, Jenna Reilly, who stole second base and subsequently scored off a single by Beall.  Pope’s next contest will be at Sprayberry High School on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
