Sunday, February 3
One of Walton High School's most recognized athletes could be a no-show for his college scholarship signing ceremony this week. According to various news reports this weekend, football standout Tyren Jones suffered a broken jaw in a locker room fight with a teammate on Friday. Score Atlanta first reported the incident Saturday, and on Sunday The Marietta Daily Journal, citing an anonymous source, confirmed that Jones would have surgery on Monday after his jaw was broken in two places. Jones, who led the Raiders to the Class AAAAA title game in 2011 and was the top rusher in the state of Georgia as a junior, is expected to sign on Wednesday with BCS national champion Alabama. The Score Atlanta report, written by Walton graduate Craig Sager…

Tyren Jones and Brandon Kublanow were chosen for Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl Game, as were Pope band members Nicole Johnson and Andie Leeds.
During their memorable careers at Walton High School, Tyren Jones and Brandon Kublanow led the Raiders football team to new heights, as they reached the state championship game as juniors. On Saturday they will take the field wearing the same uniform for the last time. Jones, a running back, and Kublanow, an offensive lineman, have been chosen for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl game in San Antonio, an all-star game for some of the nation's top seniors. The game begins at 1 p.m. and can be seen live on NBC. As seniors, Jones and Kublanow both fought injuries as Walton was eliminated in the first round of the state playoffs. Jones has committed to play at Alabama, as has Walton quarterback Parker McLeod. Kublanow, who recently was named to …

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's 2012 high school football all-state teams have six players from East Cobb-area schools on them. The newspaper released its lists earlier this week, with separate teams for each of the six classifications of competition, including player and coach of the year. From Class AAAAAA, the quarterback is Eddie Printz of Lassiter, along with his top wide receiver, Willie Police; and offensive lineman Brandon Kublanow of Walton. In Class AAAAAA, Kell defensive backs Brendan Langley and Quincy Mauger have been included, as well as Pope offensive lineman Max Kemper. Included in the honorable mention category are Walton running back Tyren Jones and Wheeler defensive back Allen Artis. Five East Cobb-area teams reached …

The Walton High School football team didn't get as far as it hoped this season -- a first round loss at home in the state playoffs to finish with a 7-4 record, with many key players battling injuries along the way. But the Raiders will have plenty to be excited about heading into next year as they learned Monday they've been chosen to participate in the Corky Kell Classic scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013. Walton will be playing Peachtree Ridge at 11:45 a.m. in the second game of the five-game extravaganza. Kell High School, named after the late Wheeler High School coach and the namesake of the Georgia Dome event, will meet Chattahoochee at 9 a.m. to start the day. The Raiders defeated Peachtree Ridge in the 2011 Corky Kell Classic as…

The Pope Greyhounds were staying close to Stephenson in the fourth quarter of Saturday's Class AAAAA first round playoff game. But four turnovers in that period were too much to overcome. As The Marietta Daily Journal reported, Stephenson scored 14 points off those turnovers to coast to a 31-11 victory. The Greyhounds end their season with a 7-4 record, and have gone to the playoffs for the last three seasons under coach Matt Kemper. Of the five East Cobb-area teams that made the playoffs, only Kell remains. On Friday, Lassiter, Walton, and Wheeler all were defeated in Class AAAAAA. And Kell had to dig out a 19-14 win over Southwest DeKalb in the final minute of play on Friday. The Longhorns will play host to Gainesville this coming …

Lassiter's enjoyment of its first No. 1 state ranking ever was brief, and it will hold some bitter memories. After leading 21-0 in the second quarter, the Trojans could get nothing going offensively in the second half of their Class AAAAAA first round state playoff game. Brookwood rallied late in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime, then kicked a field goal in the extra session to shock previously unbeaten Lassiter 24-21. The Trojans finished one of their best seasons prematurely, with a 10-1 record. But quarterback Eddie Printz and a Lassiter powerful offense were stymied when it mattered the most. In another part of East Cobb, another visiting team from Gwinnett also forced a game into overtime, and with similar results. …
Can the Raiders win without Tyren Jones? Can Lassiter handle the pressure of being No. 1? Can Wheeler and Pope win on the road?

Many questions abound for the five East Cobb-area teams competing in Georgia High School Association state football playoffs that begin tonight. That's why it's hard to pick one that stands out. The banged-up Walton Raiders, who play host to Parkview at 7:30 tonight in the first round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs, may have to take on the Gwinnett powerhouse without Tyren Jones, who missed last week's game with Roswell. Walton coach Rocky Hidalgo told The Marietta Daily Journal he's 99 percent sure the star running back won't take the field at Raider Valley because of a knee sprain. While injured quarterback Parker McLeod is back after a five-game absence, a number of other players have been ruled out or are doubtful. Walton, which finished…

Find out who the Wildcats, Walton, Pope and Lassiter will be playing in the first round of the state playoffs next weekend.
By a single point on the scoreboard and a few fractions of a percentage point on a calculator, Wheeler High School is back in the state football playoffs for the first time in six years. A cliffhanging 21-20 win at Cherokee was just enough for the Wildcats to claim the fourth and final post-season bid from Region 5-AAAAAA. Wheeler also needed help in other games and got that when Etowah and Woodstock lost on Friday. As The Marietta Daily Journal indicated in this morning's editions, Wheeler won the tiebreaker over those schools by virtue of its .500 winning percentage against Class AAAAAA teams, going 4-4. Etowah and Woodstock were both under .500 in those games. While the Wildcats (6-4, 3-4) are enjoying their accomplishment today, a …

Walton was missing injured star running back Tyren Jones for much of the game, but D.J. Smith continued to prove his star quality for the Raiders on Friday. He ran for two touchdowns and caught another touchdown pass as the Raiders defeated Etowah 21-16. Jones left the game in the first quarter with a knee sprain and did not return. While the win solidifed the No. 2 playoff seed from Region 5-AAAAAA for Walton (7-2, 5-1), it also helped the Raiders' East Cobb rivals. Wheeler improved to 5-4 and 2-4 in region play with a 31-9 win over Woodstock on Friday, keeping alive post-season chances with a week left in the regular season. But in order for the Wildcats to seal the final region playoff spot, they'll need to do more than defeat Cherokee …

I left the Lassiter/Brookwood game at the end of the 3rd quarter with Lassiter leading 21-6. I commented to a friend as we walked along the fence behind the Lassiter bench about the team laughing and horsing around like they'd already won the game. I'm disappointed in the outcome, but not surprised. Congrats Brookwood.   more ›
