Wheeler Coach Reaches Milestone

Doug Lipscomb has earned his 500th win in charge of the Wildcats' boys basketball team.

In 20 seasons, Doug Lipscomb has coached the Wheeler High School boys basketball team to five state championships and 12 regional titles. Several of his former players have starred in college basketball and a few have done well in the NBA. Earlier this week, he reached a personal milestone when Wheeler defeated Etowah. It was the 500th win for Lipscomb with the Wildcats, who are once again a powerhouse in Region 5-AAAAAA and the state. “This never gets old. It’s a joy and a blessing to work with young kids and help them in life," Lipscomb told The Marietta Daily Journal, thanking the school's administration for two decades of support. In 1992, Lipscomb arrived at Wheeler, guiding Shareef Abdur-Rahim, the first of his star players, who …

Wheeler's Win Creates Tough Title Path

The Wildcats likely will need two wins over top-eight teams, including No. 1 Milton, just to reach the state basketball Final Four.

Hey, Wheeler Wildcats, you just won your second consecutive Region 5-AAAAA boys basketball title despite playing the final two games without two of your best players. What are you going to do now? Try to survive the most loaded bracket in the Georgia High School Association’s AAAAA state tournament. Four of the eight teams in Wheeler’s quarter of the draw are in the top eight of the latest Atlanta Journal-Constitution rankings: Just for added fun, Wheeler’s crosstown archrival, Walton, which played the Wildcats tough three times this year, also falls in the same quarter of the field. That’s the competition Wheeler has to overcome just to make it to the state Final Four at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on March 8 and 9. And that’s Wheeler’s …

Wheeler Gives No. 1 Milton a Scare

Chuck Mitchell's 30 points aren't enough as the Wildcats lose at home, 65-60.

Top-ranked Milton’s visit to Wheeler turned into a battle of senior big men Tevin Glass and Chuck Mitchell. Wheeler's Mitchell won the battle Saturday night, but Milton won the AAAAA war in East Cobb, 65-60. It was the 14th consecutive win for Milton (18-4), whose only on-court loss came at home Dec. 10 against Tift County, 57-52. But it was the first time all season that the Eagles won by fewer than 11 points. Against Wheeler (10-8), Milton never led by more than 11. “Won tonight over a talented and young Wheeler team,” Milton Coach David Boyd tweeted. Mitchell was the biggest reason a Wheeler lineup packed with freshmen and sophomores made it so close. He scored a game-high 30 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, and grabbed 12 …

Outside Shooting Sinks Walton, 68-62

The Raiders slip into the consolation bracket at the Gulfshore Shootout after losing to Cardinal Gibbons in Florida.

A third-quarter three-pointer blitz buried Walton on Wednesday night as the Raiders lost to Cardinal Gibbons, 68-62, in the Winged Foot Scholarship Foundation Gulfshore Shootout in Naples, FL. Walton used its own three-point shooting to jump in front in the second-round game and led 29-25 at halftime, the Naples Daily News reported. But the Chiefs hit seven three-pointers in the third quarter, six of them in the first 3:45, to take control of the game, the Daily News said. Rico Overall led Walton with 20 points, and Josh Lyles added 10. The Raiders, who Tuesday beat South Fort Myers, 79-51, will play Naples High at 12:30 p.m. today. Wheeler Loses Tournament Opener

Playing without two starters, the Wildcats fall to Kinston, 59-51, and face an elimination game Thursday morning.

Wheeler played without starters Derrick Evans and Justin Seymour and dropped its opening game Wednesday in the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational, 59-51 to Kinston (NC). Freshman Kejuan Johnson returned from a suspension to lead the Wildcats with 20 points and nine rebounds, and senior Chuck Mitchell added 17 points and 13 rebounds in the game in Raleigh, NC, according to HighSchoolOT.com. But no one else scored more than Jacob Obande’s six first-half points. “We weren’t in our right mind-set to come out here and play today,” Johnson said during the post-game press conference. Mitchell said Kinston’s quickness gave the Wildcats problems, which isn’t a surprise because they were playing without their two primary ball handlers. …
