Wheeler High School basketball star Elijah Staley has received second team All-State honors by the AJC. The junior forward led the Wildcats to the Class AAAAAA semifinals, where they lost to Cobb rival Hillgrove. It was the best finish to a season for Wheeler since it last won a state championship in 2009. He's considered one of the top college prospects coming out of Georgia in the next year and has plenty of basketball offers. Staley also is drawing notice on the football field as the Wheeler quarterback. Two girls high school basketball stars from East Cobb also were recognized on AJC All-State teams, both in Class AAAAA. Hillgrove held off the Wildcats Saturday to advance to the Class AAAAAA boys basketball state championship game.
Jerron Love had two chances to keep Wheeler High School's hopes alive for a state basketball championship Saturday. The Wildcats' player made one of two free throws to cut Hillgrove's lead to one point with nine seconds to play, then missed a jumper at the buzzer as Wheeler fell 56-54 in a Class AAAAAA semifinal game at Georgia Tech. In losing to their Cobb rivals, Wheeler also was denied a chance for its sixth state title. But Wheeler, which finished the season with a 21-9 record, has reasserted itself as an elite team and will return most of its top players. Among them are junior forward Elijah Staley, who has already been offered scholarships by major college basketball programs, and sophomore center Daniel Giddens. More coverage:

Another high-flying, high-scoring game for Elijah Staley yielded another win for the Wheeler Wildcats. Wheeler reached the semifinals of the Class AAAAAA state basketball tournament on Wednesday with a 60-47 win over Peachtree Ridge. Staley, a junior who is receiving major college recruiting attention, scored 17 points, many on slam dunk baskets, to lead a balanced scoring attack for Wheeler, which is 21-8 on the season. It's the ninth Final Four appearance for the Wildcats under coach Doug Lipscomb but the first in four years. Wheeler, which plays Cobb rival Hillgrove Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Georgia Tech's McCamish Pavilion, won the last of its four state titles in 2009. Elijah Staley wasn't the only Wheeler player who went to the rim -- and often -- in a second-round state tournament game Saturday night. But the junior star was perhaps the most stylish for the Wildcats, who pulled away early enroute to a 96-52 win over Meadowcreek. Wheeler bolted out to a 17-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and kept building on the lead to improve to 20-8 on the seaon. On Wednesday, the Wildcats will play at home aginst Peachtree Ridge in the Class AAAAAA quarterfinals. For Staley, who's a contestant in the AJC high school basketball slam dunk contest, a sequence at the end of the third quarter ought to get him some more votes. The Wheeler Wildcats are the only East Cobb team that survived the first round of the Georgia High School high school basketball tournament. After defeating Dacula on Wednesday, the Wildcats (19-8) stay at home in a second-round game tonight against another Gwinnett opponent. The game against Meadowcreek tips off at 6 p.m. at the Doug Lipscomb Gym. Tickets are $7. Although Meadowcreek has a losing record (11-17), the Mustangs have been upset specialists in the post-season. They knocked off top-seeded North Gwinnett in the Region 7-AAAAAA tournament, then defeated Chattahoochee in overtime earlier this week.

Eight East Cobb-area high school basketball teams qualified for the state tournament. Only one has survived the first round. The Wheeler High School boys had little trouble with Dacula Wednesday, winning 71-56 at home to set up a second-round Class AAAAAA game Saturday against Meadowcreek. Tipoff time has not been announced. The Walton High School boys took to the road at Shiloh, and had a 43-33 lead after three quarters. Defending state champion Miller Grove defeated Pope 67-49 in the first round of the girls Class AAAAA basketball tournament Tuesday. The Lady Greyhounds trailed only 26-20 at halftime but Kierra Perry's 28 points weren't enough for Pope, which ended its season with a 16-10 record. Wheeler lost at Parkview, ranked No. 2 in Class AAAAAA, by a 73-48 score, also in the first round. The Lady Wildcats finished at 9-16. The Wheeler boys play at home against Dacula at 7:30 Wednesday in a first round game, and the Walton boys play at Shiloh, also at 7:30 p.m.

After losing twice to Roswell during the regular season, the Wheeler High School boys basketball team had to play on the Hornets' home floor Saturday night in the Region 5-AAAAAA championship game. As they did with Walton in the semifinals, however, the Wildcats avenged earlier defeat when it counted the most, claiming a 74-60 win to earn the No. 1 seed from the region heading into next week's Georgia High School Association state tournament. East Cobb will be well-represented in the girls portion of the state high school basketball tournament. Wheeler advanced to the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAAA playoffs with a 61-57 win over Walton Tuesday in the Region 5-AAAAAA tournament at Roswell. The state tournament appearance is the second in a row for the Lady Wildcats, who will play Woodstock in the region semifinals Thursday. The Lassiter girls also were eliminated in a 63-51 loss to Etowah. In Region 7-AAAAAA, Kell, Pope and Sprayberry all won their quarterfinal games Tuesday, meaning they're headed to the Class AAAAA state tournament. Kell, the top seed, beat Riverwood 43-34. The high school basketball regular season comes to an end tonight for East Cobb rivals who are having quite different seasons. The Wheeler boys can clinch the Region 5-AAAAAA regular season crown when it plays host to Walton. The game starts at 7:30 at the Doug Lipscomb Gym. The Wildcats, who were surprised by Cherokee on Tuesday, are 15-7 and 10-3 in region play, a game ahead of the Warriors, who play Milton on Friday. On the other hand, Walton is 11-11 and 4-8. Wheeler downed the Raiders 76-73 in overtime earlier this season.
