Hanukkah, the eight-day festival of light, began on Saturday, and two Menorah lighting events in East Cobb will take place this week. On Tuesday, Chabad of Cobb will present "Light Up the Night" and "A Taste of Chanukah" starting at 6:30 p.m. the Fountains of Olde Town Shopping Center, 736 Johnson Ferry Road. The event includes the lighting of what's claimed to be the tallest menorah in the metro Atlanta area, as well as samples of Hannukah food favorites. On Wednesday, Temple Kol Emeth will have a menorah lighting, along with Israeli dancing, storytelling and crafts and food. That event begins at 6:45 p.m. at the synagogue, 1415 Old Canton Road.

Temple Kol Emeth ushered in the first night of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, on Tuesday night. Families and friends gathered for a festive dinner at Frankie’s restaurant on Roswell Road in East Cobb. Rabbi Steven Lebow led the congregation in the blessings to light the first candle of the 9-branched menorah (hanukkiah). After dinner, the crowd went over to Temple Kol Emeth at 1415 Old Canton Road for an outdoor community lighting of TKE’s 8-foot hanukkiah. Songs were sung as the congregation gathered under the flickering lights. The eight days of Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights, begins Tuesday, and there are plenty of events catering to the East Cobb Jewish community. Menorah lightings are the central activities, and Temple Kol Emeth will have a lighting ceremony every evening except Thursday and continuing through next Tuesday, Dec. 27. The lightings will take place from 7 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. in the synagogue's parking lot. Temple Kol Emeth is located at 1415 Old Canton Road, at the intersection of Sewell Mill Road.
