East Cobb Goes to the Polls

All precincts are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday; let us know what it's like where you vote.

East Cobb voters go to the polls today to choose a number of county and state office holders, to vote on the Cobb Sunday alcohol sales referendum and to help decide the fate of an Atlanta regional transportation sales tax. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Tuesday's primary elections in the metro Atlanta area are expected to be boosted by turnout for the TSPLOST -- the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax -- that has engerendered plenty of controversy.  The penny tax would include the 10-county metro region and would be collected for 10 years, which proponents say will help relieve traffic congestion.  Opponents contend the project list will not accomplish that objective and is more a wish list for developers …

Concerned Ratepayer

10:15 am on Tuesday, July 31, 2012

It's time for a change at the Georgia Public Service Commission. Stan Wise has taken so much money from folks associated with the utilities he's supposed to regulate that he long ago forgot that he's supposed to look out for the ratepayers. Instead, he's supported rate hike after rate hike. It's time for new blood that will truly look out for ratepayers, support cleaner homegrown energy like …   more ›

East Cobb Primary Voters' Guide

Everything you need to know about the candidates, the races and where to vote on Tuesday.

The campaigning is just about over. The issues have been debated for months. Early and advance voting is complete.  All that's left is voting in Tuesday's Georgia primary to determine a number of important matters in Cobb County, including commission chairman and a variety of judgeships. In East Cobb, voters also will be casting ballots in a school board race and two state legislative races in which incumbents are being challenged. A Democratic challenger to U.S. Rep. Tom Price also will be selected. And of course, the metro Atlanta regional transportation sales tax referendum -- known as TSPLOST -- will be decided.  Also on the ballot is a vote to approve Sunday sales of alcoholic beverages in Cobb.  The following information includes …

The senior living community in East Cobb is the venue for Tuesday night's multi-race event.

At least 25 candidates and incumbents are expected to participate a forum Tuesday night at the Parc at Piedmont senior assisted living center in East Cobb. The forum takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. Parc at Piedmont is located at the intersection of Roswell Road and Hood Road. Candidate confirmations include those running for Cobb County Sheriff, the state legislature, Cobb Commission Chairman, Cobb school board, judicial races, district attorney and Cobb Superior Court Clerk and a tentative commitment from Georgia Attorney General, Sam Olens, an East Cobb resident.  Each candidate will get a 10-15 second introduction. There will be no speeches. The officials are there to talk one-on-one or in small groups.  The East Cobb Patch Election Guide …

New Process Slows Election Results

Cobb elections officials were about 90 minutes slower getting the first results out last night than during the SPLOST vote in March 2011, but then things moved faster.

If you went in search of election results Tuesday night on the Cobb County election returns home page, you had to wait until 9 p.m., two hours after the polls closed, for any information. It was close to 11 p.m. before all of the results were in. When Cobb County had the SPLOST election a year ago, the first results came in by 7:30 p.m. In an e-mail to Patch, Elections Director Janine Eveler says there is a logical, positive explanation: Our processes have changed since March 2011; we no longer ask the poll workers to transmit results from the polls. Transmitting did provide some initial results sooner but it delayed the overall process by adding 42 additional steps to the poll closing procedures and because some polls made multiple …
