Walton Athletes Sign Scholarships

Three seniors made their college choices official this week.

Many thanks go out again to Walton High School athletic secretary Tammy Feilmeier for sending us photos of Wednesday's signing day activities. Three athletes took part in spring signing day, including football star Tyren Jones, who's headed to national champion Alabama with Raiders teammate Parker McLeod. Tennis player Melisssa Mashburn (Minnesota State) and track and field athlete Erin Radcliffe (Georgia Tech) also brought in their families for the special occasion.

Fifth Third Scholarship Sweepstakes

The bank is offering a $10,000 college scholarship to the winner of its student checking account contest.

Pope Graduate Earns G-P Scholarship

Emily Gaid is the recipient of a Georgia-Pacific Foundation Employees’ Children Scholarship.

Pope High School graduate Emily Gaid has been named a recipient of the Georgia-Pacific Foundation Employees' Children Scholarship. The daughter of Perry and Loretta Gaid, Emily graduated with a 4.45 grade point average and a very active soccer player, earning four consecutive varsity letters, the Coach’s Award, and recognition for Most Valuable Player.  She was a member of the National Honor Society, The French Honor Society and The Beta Club. In the fall, Emily plans to attend Wofford College in South Carolina, where she was awarded the Old Main Scholarship to major in biology/pre-med. 6 Win Achievement Scholarships

Wheeler and Walton make a strong showing in the program for top black high school students.

Three Wheeler students, two Walton students and a Holy Spirit Prep student who lives in East Cobb have won National Achievement Scholarships. The National Merit Scholarship Corp. today announced $2 million in awards for roughly 800 academically high-achieving black high school seniors across the country. About 1,600 students earned semifinal status in the scholarship competition through their scores on the PSAT in fall 2010, then 1,300 advanced to be finalists based on recommendations, essays, SAT scores and class grades. Of the roughly 800 winners, 700 are getting single-payment, $2,500 scholarships from National Merit, and about 100 who meet specific criteria are getting corporate-sponsored scholarships, usually worth $500 to $10,000 a …
