Law enforcement agencies are assisting with patrols in the aftermath of the Connecticut school shootings.
Cobb County School District officials spent a busy weekend requesting law enforcement assistance and briefing school principals, teachers and staff about security measures in the wake of Friday's deadly school shootings in Newtown, Conn. On Monday, Cobb County police and law enforcement from other Cobb cities were making safety rounds at schools. "Our precinct patrol officers are driving by all schools in their assigned beats," Cobb Police Department Spokesman Officer Michael Bowman told Patch. Cobb schools spokesman Doug Goodwin said the district has a 44-member full-time security staff that works out of high schools and middle schools but not elementary schools for "resource" reasons. One man was killed in a traffic accident on Interstate 75 North near Barrett Parkway that saw significant traffic delays for commuters on Monday afternoon. According to Cobb County Police Sgt. Dana Pierce, at 4:14 p.m. Monday the driver of a car on Interstate 75 north at Barrett Parkway was being assisted by a HERO unit. Pierce said that the driver of the vehicle suffered a "medical issue" which caused him to leave the interstate. The car drove off I-75 and landed in a ravine, where it caught fire. The driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle, was killed. The accident brought six lanes of traffic on Barrett Parkway to a halt and caused significant gridlock on Interstate 75.

Update (12 a.m. Friday): According to Cobb Police, the man who was arrested outside the home on Jamerson Forest Circle was the man who called 911. "He did call 911. We do not know the relationship between him and the deceased female inside the residence," Sgt. Dana Pierce said to FOX 5 Atlanta. Update (11 p.m.): According to FOX 5 Atlanta, one person was taken into custody in the aftermath of the shooting. Additionally, the victim has been identified as a female. Cobb County Police are responding to a fatal shooting that was reported on Jamerson Forest Circle in East Cobb County. Cobb PIO Sgt. Dana Pierce is en route to the scene. Fishermen discovered a man in the water near an Akers Mill Road Apartment complex; police are investigating as a homicide.
Cobb County police are asking for the public’s help to identify a body two fly fishermen discovered in the Chattahoochee River near an Akers Mill apartment complex around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. The Crimes Against Persons Unit is investigating the case, as it’s believed to be a homicide. Police describe the victim as a black male about 5’10” with numerous tattoos. Cobb County’s Public Information Officer Dana Pierce said the body is too badly decomposed to offer any other details about the victim’s features. “Typically what happens when a body gets in the water is it decomposes,” he said. “If the body initially goes down underneath the water and let’s just say for example it gets hung up on rocks it’s only a matter of time before the body …

Police reported to the crime scene at Ashley Drive, off Barrett Parkway and immediately arrested an 18-year-old.
Update (8:00 a.m., Tuesday): According to a news release from the Cobb County Police Department, Damian Cornell Purdue McElrath has been charged with aggravated assault and murder in the death of Diane McElrath. Update (10:25 p.m.): The victim has been identified as 58-year-old Diane McElrath. Her son, Damian Cornell Purdue McElrath, 18, has been charged with murder and aggravated assault. Two 22-year-old men were arrested Saturday morning on a charge or loitering or prowling in East Cobb. Shawn Eugene Ryans of Augusta and Casey Jerome Nation of Douglasville were picked up at 8 a.m. in the 1600 block of High Trail, which is in the Wildwood area. Nation’s bond was set at $1,000, but Cobb County Magistrate Court Judge Frank Cox released him on his own recognizance. Ryans was charged with driving with a revoked or suspended license in addition to the loitering/prowling charge. He remained in the Cobb County jail this morning in lieu of $2,000 bond. An East Cobb man was arrested early Friday and charged with violating a temporary protective order. Syd Serna, 21, also was charged family violence battery in the incident in the 1100 block of Camelia Drive about 12:45 a.m. Both charges are misdemeanors. He was booked into the Cobb County jail, where he was still being held this morning in lieu of $5,000 bond. It was Holy Thursday, the eve of Good Friday and the day before the start of Passover, and perhaps a day for having open containers of alcohol in the car. Six people booked into the Cobb County jail Thursday face open-container charges, including two arrested in East Cobb. William Mitchell Doane, 42, of the 100 block of Spruce Street in Roswell and Taylor Shyanne White, 20, of the 4900 block of Lake Fjord Pass in East Cobb both were arrested about 1:30 a.m. in the Indian Hills subdivision. Each faces the open-container charge and a charge of driving with a revoked or suspended license. Each was released Thursday morning after posting a $1,300 cash bond. Merchant's Walk has been revived as a destination for shopping, dining and entertainment in the past year. Perhaps that also makes it a destination for people up to no good. A man from the city of Atlanta was arrested Wednesday afternoon and charged with theft by shoplifting, according to Cobb County Sheriff's Office booking records. Lynn Ellis Pickett, 53, of the 1000 block of Palmeadow Street was being held at the Cobb County jail on $3,000 bond this morning. i saw a video of one of the elementary schools in the Atlanta area where they had balloons in the entry way. I think that was a great idea. I don't have little kids, but I know it had to be very difficult letting your child leave this morning. The couple next door has four children, aged 6 to 15, and they have a yard full of Christmas decorations which he lights up and blows up at 4:30 every day…   more ›
