Wheeler High School basketball standout Chuck Mitchell is taking his talents to the Atlantic Coast Conference. Mitchell, a 6-foot-8 center, announced on his Twitter account Thursday morning that he will attend the University of Maryland: "I just want to say to my twitter family I will being a Maryland uniform next year! #goterps!" He made the announcement just before the Terrapins took to the floor at Philips Arena Thursday afternoon in the ACC Tournament. Maryland downed Wake Forest 82-60. Mitchell, rated as one of the top unsigned players by a number of college scouting services, had been recruited by Tennessee and Memphis, among other finalists. Maryland fans rushed to congratulate Mitchell on his Twitter feed, with one eager to "…

Chuck Mitchell's 30 points aren't enough as the Wildcats lose at home, 65-60.
Top-ranked Milton’s visit to Wheeler turned into a battle of senior big men Tevin Glass and Chuck Mitchell. Wheeler's Mitchell won the battle Saturday night, but Milton won the AAAAA war in East Cobb, 65-60. It was the 14th consecutive win for Milton (18-4), whose only on-court loss came at home Dec. 10 against Tift County, 57-52. But it was the first time all season that the Eagles won by fewer than 11 points. Against Wheeler (10-8), Milton never led by more than 11. “Won tonight over a talented and young Wheeler team,” Milton Coach David Boyd tweeted. Mitchell was the biggest reason a Wheeler lineup packed with freshmen and sophomores made it so close. He scored a game-high 30 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, and grabbed 12 …

The Pope Greyhounds advanced to tonight’s championship game of the Campbell Holiday Classic with a 67-37 win over Washington High on Thursday in Smyrna. Walton’s boys basketball team, coming off a loss Wednesday in the Winged Foot Scholarship Foundation Gulfshore Shootout in Naples, FL, advanced to this afternoon’s fifth-place game with a 78-56 win over Naples High, the Naples Daily News reported. But there will be not game today for Wheeler, which was eliminated from the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational in Raleigh, NC, with a 70-63 loss to Strake Jesuit of Houston. The Wildcats trailed by 18 at halftime but clawed back within two points in the fourth quarter before losing. Playing again without seniors Derrick Evans and Justin …

No. 2 Shiloh beats the Wildcats on their home court, thanks to a stolen inbounds pass and layup in the closing seconds.
Four times Wheeler had the ball out of bounds along the baseline on the offensive end in the fourth quarter. Four times the Wildcats failed to score. Those four failures—three turnovers and a missed, desperation 12-foot jump shot by Derrick Evans just before the buzzer—proved the difference in top-ranked Wheeler’s 68-66 loss at home to No. 2 Shiloh. It was an intense game for mid-December, one that happened only because of the cancellation of a showcase involving the two teams in North Carolina. The biggest lead of the game was six points, when Wheeler jumped ahead in the second quarter, but neither team led by more than four in the second half. The Generals brought a large crowd from Snellville to counter the Wildcats’ home-court …
