Van Michael Salon is proud to announce the results of their annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month fundraiser and partnership with the Pink Heals Foundation. This October, more than 950 clients participated in the salon’s Blow Out To End Breast Cancer fundraiser by selecting a premium blow dry style service for a $5 donation to the cause. The efforts of these clients and Van Michael employees raised $5,000, which will fund Pink Heals Foundation initiatives that aid Atlanta’s young cancer survivors in regaining their confidence after the completion of treatment. “We are blown away by the joint effort of our employees and clients, whose participation in this year’s Blow Out To End Breast Cancer has allowed us to more than double our 2011 …

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One of the greatest challenges for those who have been newly diagnosed is finding sources of support. Patients are eager for information on everything from enduring surgery and chemotherapy to how to deal with hair loss. While there are many local resources and support groups available in East Cobb and the metro Atlanta area, women can also find comfort in a sisterhood of survivors who have already been in their shoes. More than 700 cyclists and more than 100 runners and walkers helped raise $300,000 for the Young Survival Coalition by taking part in the Tour de Pink in Alpharetta on Saturday. The lower parking lot at Verizon Wireless Amphiteatre was the start and finish for Tour de Pink. Before the long-distance and short rides began, breast cancer survivors were introducted, many of whom rode in the race, ran or walked the 5K. Jenninfer Valdez from CBS's Better Mornings Atlanta helped with the opening ceremonies at the 7:30 a.m. start. And awareness of this deadly disease needs raising: According to statistics at BreastCancer.org, about 1 in 8 women in the United States (12 percent) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer.
