Eight boys from Cobb and North Fulton counties have accomplished an even rarer achievement than obtaining the coveted Eagle Scout award. They reached that goal as an entire Patrol within the same Troop, and celebrated that achievement in an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 10, in front of an audience in excess of 250 attendees. Eagle Scout is the highest rank any youth can achieve in the Boy Scouts, and must be attained before turning age 18. Completing a leadership project that serves the community is the largest requirement for Eagle Scout, along with serving in leadership positions, participating in volunteer service projects, representing Scouting values and earning at least 21 merit badges. The Boys Scouts of America is reported to be considering a substantial change to its current position when it comes to gays. According to CBS News, under the change being considered, it would be up to the different religious and civic groups that sponsor the various Scout units to decide for themselves how to address the issue. These organizations could decide whether to maintain the status quo of excluding gays in youth or leadership roles or open up their membership. CBS reports this was announced Monday and comes after the organization has taken hits during recent years through petition campaigns and the resulting suspension of funding from some corporations. East Cobb citizens are invited to show pride for their country and spirit in community services through the American Flag Program of the Friends of East Cobb Park and local Boy Scout organizations. Citizens still have three major holidays remaining to display their flags this year, including Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (Sept. 5), and Veteran’s Day (Nov. 11). The flag subscription program is a service and fundraising project, and the prorated cost for the remainder of 2012 is $31. Boy and Girl Scouts from around the metro Atlanta area gathered at the Marietta National Cemetery Saturday to honor veterans.
Venturers, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Brownies from around Atlanta gathered at the Marietta Confederate Cemetery on Saturday to place 18, 832 flags on the graves of veterans.
