GA Legislature Passes Carson's 1st Bill

The zoning measure saves Cobb County from some red tape.

Rep. John Carson this week celebrated General Assembly passage of the first legislation he introduced in the state House, H.B. 1089. The bill is only three sentences, but it will save Cobb County taxpayers $100,000 to $300,000 a year, according to a news release from the House press office. The House passed the bill March 7, 150-18, and the Senate followed suit Tuesday, 48-4. “I am pleased that my colleagues in the House and Senate showed overwhelming bipartisan support for this measure,” Carson said in the news release. Once signed by Gov. Nathan Deal, the measure will repeal Chapter 67 of Title 36 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, which mandates additional procedures for rezoning only in counties with at least 625,000 people and…

Northeast Cobb Patch and East Cobb Patch will have coverage of the election results and candidate reaction.

Voters didn't let rain deter them from casting a ballot today in the special election to fill the state House District 43 vacancy created by the July death of Rep. Bobby Franklin.  Fourteen precincts in Northeast Cobb and East Cobb opened at 7 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m. as voters choose among five candidates, all Republicans, as was Franklin. Nancy Gresham, a polling officer at the Lassiter High school precinct, said 13 voters cast ballots before 11 a.m. At the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church precinct, 61 voters cast ballots before 11 a.m., poll officer Steve Goff said. According to Beth Kish, registration manager at the Cobb County Board of Elections and Registration, 92 people voted early in person, and 146 cast ballots by mail…

Candidate Q&A: Roy C. Barnes

This is the first in a series of profiles of the hopefuls for the Sept. 20 special election to fill the state House District 43 seat.

Roy C. Barnes tells a story from 1932, when he was just a toddler traveling with his parents in the Northeast. The family was stopped and held for a time by police, who mistakenly thought Barnes was the kidnapped son of famous aviator Charles Lindbergh and his wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh. The Lindbergh child had been abducted days earlier in New Jersey. Barnes is 81 years old now and is one of five candidates running in a special election for the Georgia House District 43 seat, held for 15 years by Rep. Bobby Franklin, who died in July. The election for the Northeast Cobb County seat is Tuesday, Sept. 20.  If a runoff is needed, it will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18. Cobb Budget Plan Gets a Look

Commission will examine fiscal year 2012 spending on Tuesday.

The Cobb County commissioners will get a first look at the 2012 budget during a work session Tuesday afternoon.  Chairman Tim Lee said Friday that the county's 2012 budget will be about $8 million less than the $317 million 2011 budget, the Marietta Daily Journal is reporting. Lee also told the MDJ he does not expect any layoffs or furloughs of the county's 4,200 employees in the new budget year. Since May 1, county employees have been forced to take five unpaid days off to help balance the current year's budget. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 last month in favor of raising taxes to make up a possible $33 million deficit in the 2012 fiscal year. Commissioners Bob Ott and JoAnn Birrell voted against the proposal. The …
