A new semester and school year started last Friday at Chattahoochee Technical College with approximately 3,900 new students on the rolls. Georgia’s largest technical college began classes on Aug. 17 at its eight campuses that span six counties in Northwest Georgia. “This is always an exciting time of year,” said Chattahoochee Technical College President Ron Newcomb. “We have new programs beginning and new students joining us for the first time. We also welcome back students who are finishing their degrees, diplomas and certificates this year and are eager to help them start or continue their careers.” More than 12,400 students were registered for classes on the first day—in line with last year’s enrollment numbers. Lunch money just got smart. Just in time for the kickoff of a fresh school year at Cobb County Schools, the app that turns a parent’s iPhone or iPad into a mobile payment system for their child’s school meals has hit the Apple App Store. The free app MyPaymentsPlus was designed to help busy parents and guardians make on-the-go meal payments with just a few keystrokes. The app also enables parents to see what foods their children choose in the cafeteria, a feature that can be helpful for parents seeking to instill healthy eating habits. Through the app, parents can check their children’s account balances, review recent transactions and add money using a credit card, debit card, savings account or checking account. With school districts across the metro area now officially back-to-school, we begin a series of weekly questions, which, today, is focused on the subject of spending.
Now that Cobb County schools are back in session, many parents have spent countless hours at local stores helping their students find the right pencils, perfect "first day" outfits and fill school supply lists. The National Retail Federation projects that parents of children in grades K-12 will spend nearly $689 on their children's back-to-school needs, almost $85 more than last year. Georgia shoppers didn't pay sales tax on any back-to-school items within a certain dollar amount this past Friday and Saturday. But some criticized the tax holiday as being too little, too late. The Cobb Department of Transportation undertook the following projects over the summer to prepare for the start of the school year: Paper Mill Road at Sope Creek Elementary School This project added a right turn lane and lengthened the left turn lane on Paper Mill Road at the main school entrance. School driveway improvements included a new left turn lane for motorists exiting the school, and traffic signal and pedestrian signal upgrades. Jiles Road at Kennesaw Elementary School School zone improvements, part of the Jiles Road Improvement project, have provided traffic and safety improvements to the main school entrance. Enhancements include a new right turn lane into Kennesaw Elementary and creation of separate right and left turn …

A special Back-to-School sales tax holiday begins throughout Georgia on Friday. According to the office of Gov. Nathan Deal, tax exempt shopping is limited to the following: Items that do not qualify for the sales tax exemption include jewelry, handbags, watches and umbrellas.
