The Pope and Walton baseball teams are playing at home Monday afternoon in the semifinals.
Despite leading for a good portion of the match, the Lassiter girls lacrosse team couldn't hold on against the dynasty that is Milton in Saturday's Georgia High School Association Class AAAAAA finals. Milton came away with a 10-7 win for its third consecutive championship and eighth title since 2005, but the Lady Trojans felt like they had done all they could. “They almost pulled it out,” Lassiter coach Faith Harmeyer told The Marietta Daily Journal, referring to her players. “I would have liked to have had this one for the seniors, but we’ll get it.” The Lassiter girls were hoping to add to the East Cobb contingent of spring sports state champions. But the season came to an end for the Pope boys soccer team Thursday.
The Pope Greyhounds needed to get to the middle innings to punch their ticket to the state baseball semifinals. The Walton Raiders got a leadoff homerun in the first inning. Both East Cobb teams won decisive third games Thursday in the Georgia High School Association state tournaments, and will be staying at home as the playoffs continue. Pope trailed Evans 2-0 before responding in the fifth inning enroute to a 12-2 win. The Greyhounds will play host to Starr's Mill in a Class AAAAA semifinal series that begins with a doubleheader on Monday. Walton, which downed Tift County 5-2 in Class AAAAAA, will face Roswell Monday at Raider Valley. The Monday game times for both Pope and Walton have not been announced. The lacrosse battle of East Cobb lived up to the billing Tuesday. The Lassiter girls led Walton 10-5 at halftime, then hung on in the final minutes of the match to claim a 13-11 win over Walton in the semifinals of the Georgia High School Association Class 6A tournament. The Greyhounds and Raiders will be playing host to quarterfinal doubleheaders on Tuesday.
After some dramatic comebacks last week, the Walton baseball team stays at home in the Georgia High School Association tournament quarterfinals today seeking a less eventful way to stay on a roll. The Raiders play host to Tift County in a Class AAAAAA doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. The second game is slated to start at 7 p.m. If a third game is needed in the series, it would take place on Wednesday, also at Walton. The Pope Greyhounds also had to pull out their second round series in Class AAAAA on Friday against Winder-Barrow, setting up today's quarterfinal series against Evans at Pope. That was kind of it.” That, according to an Associated Press report, was how Toronto Blue Jays pitcher J.A. Happ described the line drive that hit him in the head during his team’s May 7 game against Tampa Bay. The impact left him with a skull fracture and a knee that was tweaked as he fell to the ground. Happ’s injury has brought attention to other pitchers who have sustained similar injuries in the past. Major league pitcher Bryce Florie was struck in the right eye by a line drive more than a decade ago. She was among several Cobb athletes who excelled in Albany over the weekend.
Athletes in 10 events who represented Cobb, Douglas and Paulding schools brought back first-place medals from the Georgia High School Association girls state track and field championships in Albany. Two teams also peformed well in the event, which ran from Thursday through Saturday, as Kell High School finished second in the Class 5A meet and Marietta was third in Class 6A. Kell's Kendell Williams closed out her illustrious career with three titles, winning the 5A high jump, long jump and 100-meter hurdles. She earned 11 crowns in her high school career, and on Friday broke her own state record in the long jump. The Walton High School girls tennis team is back in the winners circle. After having their state record streak of nine consecutive Georgia High School Association state championships broken last season, the Lady Raiders reclaimed the title Saturday in the Class 6A finals. They downed Peachtree Ridge 3-2 at the Clayton International Park in Jonesboro to finish the season with an 18-0. The Pope baseball team advanced to the quarterfinals; the Pope and Lassiter girls soccer teams and Pope boys lacrosse teams were eliminated.
East Cobb is guaranteed a spot in the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAAA girls lacrosse championships. That's because Walton and Lassiter easily won their quarterfinal matches on Friday, setting up an East Cobb showdown Tuesday in the semifinals at Walton. Walton routed Alpharetta 12-2 as Erin McBride scored five goals. Lassiter's Johnna Fusco scored three times and have five assists as the Lady Trojans throttled Centennial 18-2. Good grief what a ridiculous thing to require and regulate more and more of our lives!
