A teenage girl was approached by a suspicious male in a van near Pope High School this week.
The Cobb Police Department's Precinct 4 has issued an alert to parents after a suspicious male approached a female student waiting for a school bus near Pope High School on Tuesday. Police said a teenage female was waiting for a bus by herself at Cherbourg Way and Portland Court, located just off Hembree Road, around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. A while male driving a blue van pulled up to the bus stop, police said, and asked the student if she wanted a ride to school. The girl turned down the offer, then the man asked her if she wanted to make money and if she lived in the neighborhood, according to police. A Marietta man was sentenced to 34 months in prison on Monday for lying to federal investigators about an imaginary terrorist plot to bomb an airliner. Henry Guy Jones, 51, also had to pay a $100 special assessment and will face three years of supervision after his release from prison. “The defendant diverted much-needed federal resources dedicated to address true threats of terrorism to investigate his web of lies,” U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said in a news release. Wheeler High School officials notified students and parents Thursday that no parking will be allowed for the remainder of the school year along Club Way. Vehicles that park on the small residential street adjacent to East Cobb Middle School for carpool purposes could be subject to ticketing by Cobb Police. The ECMS parking lot has been used for Wheeler carpool parking this school year because of renovations at Wheeler, located across the street on Holt Road, but some vehicles also have been waiting along Club Way. Parents or others performing Wheeler carpool duties are asked to wait in the ECMS parking lot.

Four members of a counterfeit document ring based in Smyrna were sentenced to federal prison Wednesday on charges of conspiring to produce fraudulent documents. Ruben Osorno Altamirano, 31, Jose Luis Israel Legoretta Castillo, 31, Juana Hernandez Fonseca, 40, and Jose Molina Vasquez, 33, received sentences ranging from 10 months to two years in prison, plus two years of supervised release. All are from Mexico. U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said in a news release that the men ran a counterfeit identification operation out of a Smyrna laundry.
